This evening the fortnightly dance' of the Shannopy Tennis Club : will be held in the Parish Hall.
The fortnightly, meeting of the Borough Council will be held at the council Chambers this evening. Miss Eastwood* of-Te : Arohja;, who was a i resident on the Kingston road for many years, is at present visiting friends in Shannon.
A general meeting of members- of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce will be* held on Wednesday evening for confirmation of rules and registration of Chamber.
A visitor to Miranui. Mill last, week was Mr Anderson, of Mombassa, East Africa, who. is interested in the sisal plantation in that country. The prizes for the best dressed lady and gentleman at the plain and fancy dress baH on Friday evening were a pair of silver vaises tor the former and a fountain pen for the latter. Miss Wehipeliana and Mr Napier were, the winners'.
At Miranui mill last week Mr C. Hansman met with a painful accident. While engaged to working a stripper he had the misfortune to have his thumb badly crushed in one of the rollers, necessitating medical attention.
As a comparison of railway freights in East Africa and New Zealand, Mr Anderson', a planter in the former country, who visited Miranui last week, states that the railway freight for 400 miles in East Africa is £1 per ton while for railing flax to Wellington from Mirainui a distance of 69 miles, the charge is £1 5s per ton. Three large valves for the Public Works Department arrived, at the local station during the week end. These valves are for connecting up the main pipes at the, power house at Mangore. Each one weighs 8, tons 4 cwt. 1 qr., and to handle them’ it is necessary to take each one to pieces and take it out in sections. Mr C. G. Franks, the local motor carrier, has the work of conveying them! to Mangore.. A horse attached to a dog cart, caused some mild xcitement in Plimmer Terrace at mid-day yesterday by endeavouring to kick the turnout to pieces. After kicking the front out of of the vehicle and emptying the occupant on the roadside it careered along the main street, narrowly missing several vehicles which were on the road at the time. The last seen of the runaway it was going towards Makerua'. During Mr R. Tippler’s visit to Taranaki 1 a.st, week be purchased a valuable yearling Jersey bull from Mr 1-' B. T.epner, of Te Puke Awa, Lepperton. The bnlll is bv Maori French, whose dam is Elf’s Beauty, who has had an exceptionally successful career in the Show ring and under semiofficial test, having in 192.1 secured the gold medal for production with 800.75 fat and 13.679.651bs of milk. The dam of Mr Tippler’s purchase is Maori Pearl, whose da‘rn. Li 1 tom's Mali, under test put ulp 705 ]bs fat,. With such a. record behind him this bull should he a valuable acquisition to this disfnv.t from Ihe breeder’s point of- view.
