SUCCESSFUL PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL.
A very successful plain and fancy dress bail was held by the Shannon Athletic Club in. the Druids’ Hall on Friday evening. There was a large attendance and visitors were present from Palmerston, Levin and all parts of the district. The room was splendidly decorated] with coloured streamers and together with the many coloured dresses of the dancers presented an animated sight. The music was supplied by Larkin’s full jazz orchestra;, extras being played by Mrs Davies Miss Whyte, and Messrs Hook and J. Olsen. The supper arrangements were in the hands of . a strong ladies’ committee, the,.management being all that could, be desired. Mr W. Quairrie ably officiated as M.C., At an opportune moment Mr J. T. Bovis (president), on behalf of the Club thanked the committee and especially the ladies for the good) work they had done in making the function such a: success. Great interest was taken, in the fancy dress competition, there being numerous competitors and the many pretty cud novel costumes were much admired. The prizes for the best dressed lady and gentleman were won by Miss Wehipeihana and Mr Napier who appeared as “Adam and Eve.” Their costumes were comprised of leaves and the giat-uD was a very novel one. Among others who appeared in fancy dress were Mesdames Freeman, “Jes’er.” Misses Greedy “Fibre,” Burling “Aulsebrook Chocolates,” J. King “Powrlp.r Puff,” Merwood “Peanut Queen,” Blythe “Folly,” Harris “Span, ish Dancer,” B. Bowler “House to Let.” Dunlop “Jockey,” I. McGregor “Queen of Sheba.,” Gooch “Harlequin,” Bowler “Queen of Hearts,” Messrs Freeman “Jester,” J. Stevenson “Misleading Lady,” Bowler “Ruination,” R. Hesp “Russian Imperial Dancer,” R. Creighton “Russian Imperial Dancer,” D. Hudson “Cannibal King,” H. McKenzie “Demon.” The committee are to be congratulated on the excellent arrangements and the manner in which the ball was conducted and it must be very gratifying to them that it was such a success as they had worked hard to attain that end. Among the ladies present were Mrs Grylls, tomato red georgette, Mrs Dinnie lemon satin and georgette, Mrs Waring-Taylor black silk, Mrs B. Spencer black floral taffeta,, Mrs C. Hardie black charmeulse, With floral spray, Mrs Balfour powder blue taffeta and ninon, Mrs Davey jade green sequin georgette, Miss Curran emerald green georgette, Miss F. Cameron silver grey crepe de chine, Miss McKegg lemon brocaded satin, Miss A. Brown applegreen', satin, Miss Stevenson cream georgette, 'Miss Whyte jade crepe de chine, Miss F. Hewitt shell pink crepe d,e chine and silver tissue, Miss E. Roach cream lace over silk, Miss Neale white beaded ninon over pink silk, Miss Ryan tomato red georgette, MissL. Brown peach crepe de chine, Miss E. King canary crepe de chine, Miss R. Roach white georgette.
