GOLF NOTES.

TOMBSTONE COMPETITION

The local links are now in good playing order, and members of the club ' should endeavour to get in ‘as much practice as possible during the fine weather. No. 3 hole has been removed to a more conspicuous position, although “Hades” is still tile great stumbling block to the timid. Thejocal rules may now be examined ht the links, and all players are earnestly requested to make themselves familiar with them. To new players the rules governing boundaries are always troublesome, but true golfers will see that they are strictly adhered to.

It. is to 'he regretted that the general rules of golf are studied so little, and it is unfair for a player to enter the sport if he does not intend making himself acquainted with the rules and etiquette of the game. It is most exasperating to ah old player when he discovers that his opponent has not been adding the proper penalties at hazards, breakers, boundaries, lost ball, etc. Scoring pads may now be obtained from the hon. secretary at Is each for a block of fifty. Players are requested to hand in as many cards as possible so that a more accurate estimate of handicaps may be made. Otherwise the handicaps allotted may make it hopeless for a player to even think of winning a medal. Medal matches will be commencing shortly and it is hoped that members will make the competitions keen and interesting by frequent practice. On Saturday next, it is hoped that the ladders will be ready, so matches for positions, thereon may commence next week. Anyone on the ladder may challenge the one immediately above. Rules and ladder may he seen at the golf house. TOMBSTONE COMPETITION. On Monday next, King’s Birthday, a tombstone competition will be held on the local links. Play will commence at. 1 p.m. Each member is t,o supplv himself with, a piece of smooth flat wood twelve inches long by three wide, pointed at one end. Comic epitaphs requested. Directions as to method of play will be given at the course, prior to starting.
