SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council 'was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present, The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Hyde, Beard* Gunning, Curran, Carter, Butt, Gardener, Murray, and the engineer (Mr Edwards). Mr C. Hardie wrote complaining of the unsatisfactory position which he had been placed in regarding his workers’ cottage. To-day he stated he was called on by the contractor to sign a. statement which absolutely placed the engineer clear of all responsibility. By the_; writer refusing to sign, the contractors were being held up for their payments, for which reason he had signed. He considered the propier method for the engineer to adopt was to obtain the signature of the Housing Committee, knowing that the writer was not satisfied 'withi the supervision of the house. The, contract price of £754 had now reached £,795 without stamp duty and legal expenses. He hail already had £25 worth of improvements done at his own expense. The section cost £85,. making a total of £9oo, less stamp duty and legal expenses. He stated this sunn was far in advance of what he expected to pay for a worker’s cottage and he asked if the Council could 'see their way clear to have the, price reduced. The letter was received. CORRESPONDENCE. Fronn the clerk of the Horowhenua County Council, asking the Council to attend conference of various local bodies re bridge over the Manawatu river on Shiannon-Foxton road to be held in Parish Hall, Shannon, on Fri-1 day, June 8, at 11.30 a.m.—lt was d_ecided to attend. From Ranger reporting that he had now resumed his duties. —It was decided that a notice be inserted m the local paper that in future Ml persons allowing stock to wander will be prosecuted. „ ~, , „ From Department of Health forwarding for restaurants, etc. ias regards sanitation and general cleanliness of premises.—Held over till next meeting. ROADMAN’S REPORT. The roadman reported that during April and May up to date they have carted out 176 yards of metai for repairs to several roads that, have suifered from heavy traffic and at present were patching up the Shannon- . Foxton road with rough metal. This road is'in a bad state and requires a lot of metal to .put it m order. The six 6ft by 18-inch pipes that, came to hand haVe been put in in Plimmer Terrace opposite Mr J• Bresnehan s property and the road is now safe. ' Accounts totalling £36 were passed for payment. The meeting then adjourned.
