On Monday, June 4, tile 7.20 a.ra. train lroni Shannon to Wellington, and the train usually leaving Wellington and reaching Shannon at 8.6 p.m., will not run. The tender of Messr s Schioler and Law, of Palmerston North, has been accepted for she erection of the twostorey building for Messrs Carter Bros, in Ballance street. Work is to be commenced immediately.

The installation meeting of Lodge Mangahao was held on Monday, the 21st inst., when Bro. T. Cooper, jun., was installed ias W.M". After the ceremony a 1 'banquet was held r when the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly Honoured. Visitors were present from Foxton, Levin and Palmerston North.

It was stated heavy loads ‘pass through the town reaching proportions unheard of. Cr. Carter said it was high time something was done and they should be taxed, even if it meant erecting toll-gates. It was decided that the Town Clerk be’ instructed to see that people engaged in heavy traffic have licenses. The Mayor reports that the netamount received from the Scotch concert recently .held in aid of funds for a soldiers’ memorial, 'was £l9 18s.

The 'Parish Hail was packed on Tuesday night for the euchre and dance in connection with the Anglican Church, and an enjoyable time 'was spent. In the euchre tournament three ladies fifed for first place, viz., Mesdames Churdher, Davey and Satlierley, the latter winning the cut, Mrs Moynihan .won the consolation prize. The gents’ prize went to Mr Gaghardi, the consolation going to Mr McKechnie. After the euchre, dancing was indulged' in until midnight. All music-lovers can be assured of a real treat next Tuesday night. Mrs G. P. Anderson has kindly promised to play accompaniments and there will be some very fine vocal solos, duets, quartettes, choruses, and instrumental items. Lots of fun and heaps of pleasure.

A feature of the “Soldiers’ Dream, ’ a story without words, to be shown at the entertainment next Tuesday, will be the facial expressions of those taking part. As the whole sketch must be acted without speaking, the audience must be able to follow the mean ing of the tale by the action and expressions of the actors. Thus when the soldier i & gazing at the photographs of his “past loves,” his present feelings regarding each one are clearly depicted on his face and some very amusing acting results. When he eventualy falls asleep and his dreams materialise there are some very pretty scenes as each, “amour” appears. There is a climax.

We regret to announce the death of Mr William' Gray, a well-known resident of Shannon, who passed away at the Palmerston North Hospital on Tuesday last after a long illness. The late Mr Gray was bom at Hamilton, Waikato, 47 years ago. I-le was at, one time in the employ of Mr -T. H. Richardson, Commissioner of the Government Life Insurance, and afterwards was in charge of a large orchard of over 20 acres at. Spring Grove, Nelson. The deceased then tried dairy farming at Inglewood, afterwards 'being empToyed at the cheese factories at Ngaire and Te Boro, and subsequently in charge of the creamery at Thakara, where be remained for over three years. Deceased leaves a widow, a sister of Mrs Barker, a,t Newtown, who will have the deepest sympathy in herbefeavenient.

A meeting of the Shannon Football Club was held on Wednesday night, when Mr Grimstone reported on the meeting held by delegates of Sports bodies to consider improvements to Recreation grounds, and the erection of a soldiers’ memorial. He .said the delegates had decided to wait on the Reserves Committee with various suggestions in the matter of improvement to the ground, also if they came to arrangement-; with the Reserves CommiUce it had been decided to pick a strong committee from each body, to work together to carry out whatever scheme was decided on to rai-e funds. He stated he felt sure if they worked together whatever scheme they undertook. it would be a success. The meeting approved of their delegates’ action.

The education sketch which finishes the programe at next Tuesday night’s entertainment, is of particular interest. in these times, showing the inner secrets of the “N.Z.R.5.,” the workings of which branch of the public service should, of course, be known to young and old alike, and has so far not .been made very public in New Zealand.

What might have been a serious accident occurred on Friday afternoon. As one of the Public Works' motor lorries was returning from Arapeti. it suddenly left the road and turned into the bank. On examination it was found the pin in the ,Puo axle which holds the front wheels on ha cl come out about 7 or 8 chains along the road, thereby causing the driver to have no steering control. It must have been Providence ibat, the car turned into the bank, as had it taken the other direction there wrs a drop of fully 100 ft at this particular spot, and as there were four adui's and two or three children on the loirv a fatality would certainly have r ikon place.
