NOTES ON THE GAME.
In their - game against Hui Mai on Saturday, the Weraroa. backs put up a better showing than in the previous game against Wanderers. Towards the end of the game the .defence practically rested with them, and they put in some sound work. Wells was undoubtedly a tower of strength for the Weraroa back division. This player has more than justified the reputation he Lrought from the King Country, and saved Weraron on .many occasion from further
scores. He is fast, kicks well, is a
sound tackier, and uses his head, and lias besides the rarest trait of all, the pluck to play ai hard sound game, without adequate support. A point noticed in Saturday’s game was the number of times both teams when on the defence kicked the ball out from oi line-out. This may be sale tactics but does not add to the interest of the game from the spectators point of view.
Marsland, who played centre threequarter for Weraroa. had to leave ihe field early with a dislocated shoulder. He was playing a sound game, and his accident was a decided loss to his team. Weraroa is unfortunate in not having a solider pack of forwards. Taken as players they were probably man for man, as good exponents of the game as their Hui Mai opponents, but Ihey ran themselves out in the first spell against the opposing team’s solid rushes. Riangi Broughton, who was in useful form, Co] ( e end Brown were the best of the forwards. Hopa again played a, sound game for Weraroa and was always ro'und' when he was wanted, whilst his kicking was notably good. The free-kick which added the second half of Weraroa’s score, was from three yards short of half-way and well lowards the line..
The veteran. Bob George, w'no enplatined the visitors, played a great, game for Hui Mai. H e showed a useful turn of speed, and when lie got the ball generally fooled his opponents with tricky running. After 20 odd years of play he lias all the science of the game and has not yet gone stale. Wanderers' try in the Shannon— Wanderers game on Saturday, wa; the result of a fine piece of play on Jacob's part. Bearing down on the line with Ihe ball, with Wilson beside him, he threw out past Wilson 1o Kerione, who scored, out-generalling the opposition, who imagined they had only Wilson to contend with.
Rough play in the Foxton—Toko*mam junior m.atch necessitated a player from each team being ordered off the field, whilst the language of somej of i.he spectators was as one spectator described it, a disgrace to a football field. The matter came up before the Management Committee of the Union at Tuesday's meeting, and it was decided to draw the attention of the . police to matter of the language used, and ask them to take action under such circumstances in the future. Kerione, who scored for Wanderers in tbie Shannon match, is a player who, whilst not spectacular, is always around when he is wanted.. He has put up two 1 out of the three scores credited to Wanderers in their competition games, and although he did not make the openings, he was always there to take advantage of them.
The Foxton-Otaki senior fixture was a very even game. The ground was in a particularly greasy condition. so that no high-class football was possi bie and the forwards were compelled to bear the brunt of the day, with only occasional flashes' of good work by the backs. Both teams are perhaps, above last year’s showing and a very close finish should result in the senior competition. The Shannon Football Ulub have entered a senior and junior team for Ihe seven-a-side tournament to be held' at Palmerston North on. the 4th .Tune. Both are strong teams and should give a good aecounl of themselves.
T.enihan, half back for Shannon, met with an accident during last Saturday’s game. At the conclusion of tltie game he had to consult the doctor and on examination it was found he had fractured a ril>.
A. Rowlands, who has been playing for Tokoniaru juniors, at the Union meeting on Tuesday evening was classified its a senior player. He inlends liecoming a miember ,of the Shannon Club and should be a valuable addition as be is a splendid goalkicker. shannon trams. Seniors against Hui Mai at Manakau. —Prain, T.
