*A ladies’ football team has been formed in Shannon and the members iare now training hard with a. view to challenging representatives of neighbouring towns.

The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council will be held in the Council Chambers this evening. The Tennis Club’s dance will be held in the Parish Hall this evening. The Mayor Mr Murdoch) will represent the Shannon Borough Council on the deputation of those interested ifi the flax industry, who will wait on the Prime Minister at Wellington today, with awiew to getting financial assistance from the Government to assist them in improving the industry.

Nurse Bulkeley, of the Education Department, who visited the local school last week, is engaged, in preparing the way for the medical officer, who will visit the school after the holidays.' Her duties consist of preparing the medical cards and also examining the children’s teeth, and reporting cases that need attention. She expressed herself as being well pleased with the clean and healthy state of the children, stating they were as creditable as any she had seen. She also complimented the. staff on the tone of the school, especially the behaviour of the hig boys.

Replying to a question from Mr Harkness at Tuesday’s meeting Mr G. A. Monk, chairman of the HoroWhenua Electric Power Board, said that there was no truth in the rumour that the Government would sell electricity direct to large consumers such as Boroughs and flaxmills. The Borough of Sh.iiinch'» explained", had approached the Government in this connection and had been refused. He further explained that it was not in the interest of the large ufcers of power, such as flaxmills to buy direct from the Government as if they did so they would have to buy straight out, the amount, necessary for their requirements. A hig consideration under the present arrangement was that they could sell the same ,bored-power to different consumers at different times of the day—to the farmer and flaxmiller for power during the day, and to Boroughs and for general lighting purposes at night, thus enabling them to sell considerably cheaper than could otherwise be done,
