TAXATION OF BETTING.

A BISHOP’S VIEW.' LONDON, May 2. Bishop Welhlon, speaking -in favour of the taxing of betting, at the Convocation at York, said: “My- view is that there is no difference between a stock exchange transaction and a bet; Don’t let us confound prac-: tices which become sinful if carried to excess with practices sinful in themselves. It would estrange all the more moderate churchmen to suggest ,at t is sinful to have a glass l of beer or wine or to make a bet, however small.”

The Convo'cation passed a resolution by twenty-six votes to twenty-three against the proposed tax on betting.
