The monthly meeting of the Druids Lodge will be held in the Parish Hall next Thursday evening.
Next Wednesday being Anzac Day a service by combined churches will be held in the Maoriland Theatre at 11 a.m.
The Shannon Football Club will open their season next Saturday at the Recreation Grounds with a practice match with Mangore. All intending players for the season are requested to attend.
The executive meeting of the Horowhenua Cricket Association, which was to have been held at Shannon on Wednesday evening, lapsed for want of a quorum.
Members and friends of the Methodist Church are reminded of the special services on Sunday in connection with the Sunday School anniversary, and on Friday evening at the Parish Hall there will be a social gathering, when the prizes will be awarded to the children for the year’s work and attendance. An enjoyable programme has been aranged and the committee would like to see as many old friends as possible present sit 7.30 in the Hall. The charge for admission is Is.
The committee of the Shannon Tennis Club have decided to postpone the annual ball to be held on May 29 to a future date to be. arranged. We have heen asked to announce that the drawing of the Art Union will take place at the Maoriland Theatre instead of Druids’ Hall, on Tuesday, May 29. On that night the committee have arranged a first' class concert programme for which particulars will be announced later.
At the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday evening a social gathering was held to make a: presentation to Mr and Mrs Nelson and to welcome Mrs Nelson to Shannon, on the occasion of their recent marriage. Mr. Stewart presided over the gathering, and m making the presentation of a handsome clock, to Mr and Mrs Nelson, eulogised Mr Nelson for the prominent part he had taken in church work and extended a. hearty welcome to. Mrs Nelson, on behalf of the members and friends of the church. Mr Nelson suitably replied and a very fine programme was arranged and a moet enjoyable evening spent by all those pres ent. Mr Clayton thanked the organisers and all those who had taken part Thei following contributed items: Misses A. Clayton, V. Aim, A. Aim, Baby Brown, Me'sdames Bovis and Bishop. Messrs Watkins Miller, Martin, McGregor and Bishop. A games competition was held for adults and one for children and were won by Misses R. Roach and. N. Watterston, Master Rigby and Miss Gwen Brown, who received trophies.
Thei fortnightly .euchre and dance of the Shannon Tennis Club was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening, which was well attended, everybody having a pleasant time. Mrs Butler was the winner in the euchre tournament for the ladies, and Mr Hensman secured the men’s prize.
On Monday last the wedding was solemnised at Perth, Western Australia, of Winifred May, the youngest daughter .of Mr T. James, a very old resident of Shannon, to Arthur, son of Mr and Mrs A. Hall, of Perth. The bride has many friends in Shannon, ha,ving spent her girlhood days here. The happy couple will reside at Lake Brown, Nungarie, Western Australia.
At Tuesday night's Council meeting, the Engineer (Mr Edwards) reported to the Council on the question wisely brought forward by the Town Clerk in respect to obtaining gravel from the Otauru Creek, in the event of the Public Works Department erecting banks along the stream. He assured the Council that he would see they were properly protected In securing gravel.
The matter of erosion in the Otauru stream near the Pound came up at the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday night. The Engineer submitted a report which was taken in committee and discussed at some length, the Council eventually deciding to approach owners concerned with a view to having the matter amicably settled. An application from the Shannon School Committee for the dressing of 400 square yards of the playgrounds with tar, was favourably considered by the Wellington Education Board at last Tuesday’s meeting.
