IHi; racing described. Punters Begin Well. Black Cruiser took the held as favourite in the Lockwood Handicap, ihapotoa ttlok the lead with no serious competition until the straight was reached, then Stream and Alaric challenged. The held bunched ) and Black Cruiser and Alaric passed the judge’s box almost together. Good Mark was a length away third. Some Bed, and Miss Mickey wef'e scratched. Black Cruiser carried a 51b. penalty. Malingerer* the Hurdles. Price and War Loan were the only scratchings in the Kairanga Hurdles Handicap. En Route being the lirst choice of backers. Automoana drew' away steadily- with Malingerei handy. On the last round, En Route put in a challenge and Explorer moved up to third place. After leaving the last hurdle Malingerer shot ahead. En Route took third place and Explorer fourth. It was an easy win for Malingerer by a comfortable two lengths. .Lady Kotiripo Under Weight. Of the field of twenty to face the starter in the Stonyhurst Welter Handicap, Lady Kotiripo stepped smartly in front with Santonio and Bodyguard in close attendance. Coming up the straight, Island came out of the ruck and looked troublesome, but Lady Kotiripo 'was finishing strongly and won by a neck. The winner failed to draw the weight by tlireequarters of a pound, and the race was given to Island. Santonio, the third horse to finish, was consequently placed second and Pantler third. Gold Star was fourth. Asltari v r as favourite and Santonio the second choice. Stakes to Thespian. Alabama and Queen March were scratched for the Manawatu Stakes. Tamatete was placed favourite, aud led the field, with Attractive next. On the run home, Thespian came up, he and Tamatete ran for the finishing post together, the former winning by a neck. Listorvel was three lengths away third. Deluge Again. All the eight acceptors lined up for the Cloverlea Nursery, King’s Joy and Deluge being most in demand. Deluge led a drawn out line, but was leaded after two furlongs by King s Joy. Coming into the straight. Deluge again tood command, with Civility coming up fast on the outside. Deluge passed the post one and lengths in front ot King’s Joy, with J Reremoana, who finished fast in front

of Civility third, Takaroa was several lengths away, last, Sunart Wins. The Liongburu Handicap was a race full of incident. Broadwood, Bonetter, Scotch Mixture, and Sunart were fancied in that order 1 , truest and Scotch Mixture led the van from the start, with the rest of the d el u well bunched. On passing the judge s box for the first time. Festivity fell, bringing down Taiparau with him, and seriously interfering with Wheatfield, who dropped out. The field kept their respective positions going along the back, with Rouen, Sunart and Bonetter moving up. On entering the straight, Quest was a length ahead of the field, but Sunart put in a determined challenge and beat Quest by a neck, with Rouen a length away. Then came Bonetter. As the field turned into the straight. Dainty Step came down with a broken fetlock, and was later destroyed. Alexander and Garrett were removed to the hospital, and Butler, on Dainty Step, wr badly shaken. BirkeneUa’s Victory. Miss Mickey and Red Helen carried the confidence of the punters in the Adderstone Welter. Bonecto led the field for the greater part of the jour- * ney, Meriy Ann being his closest attendant. At the far bend, Empyrean and Miss Mickey improved their positions, and turning into the straight Birkenella, Kao Tane and Left moved up. Birkenella put in a challenge at the distance and won by a, clear length from Kao. Tane, with Left filling third place, ‘ two lengths away. Next came Bonecto. Triboulet Winds Up Well. Hipo was the only withdrawal from the Borough Handicap, and Triboulet was sent out a slightly better fav-

ourite than Chimera. Some Red was clear of the rest of the field until the far turn, where Triboulet, Martian Miss and Barrier put in claims. The first-named finished very fast, beating Martian Miss by a head, with Lucius a head away. Then came Some Red. Weighing-In. Once again, the new rule concerning the corerct weighing in, is causing much discussion locally, and most likely everywhere. When Lady Kotiripo won the Stonyhurst Welter at Awapuni yesterday it was found that •on returning to scale her rider was tlireequarters of a pound short weight, which was not only disheartening to the owner, trainer and jockey, but to the followers of 6 the Lord Multifid mare. It is quite evident, -.without detracting in the Jfcast from the merits of Island’s performance, that Lady Kotiripo won well, and as she carried no lead, and none 1 of the rider’s paraphernalia was missing, the only inference one may draw is that the scales are not sufficiently accurate. Several similar instances have occurred in the short time this rule has been in force, in which the winner of a race has been unjustly penalised on account of a purely technical defection, amounting at the most to a few ounces. The sooner the Racing Conference restores the old rule, allowing an owner to draw the allowance of ltlbs., the better it will be for all concerned in the racing game. A Chapter of Accidents. A chapter of accidents occurred during the running of the Longburn Handicap at ' Awapuni yesterday. In passing the judge’s box the first time, Festivity (Alexander) fell, bringing .down Taipairu (Garrett) and seriouslv interfering with Wheatfield (Pine> With two furlongs to go, Dainty Ste ,(Butler), in the ruck, fell and broke fetlock, and was later destroyed. Taipairu suffered injuries that will prevent her from racing again, while Wheatfield and Festivity were badly knocked about.

Garrett, w r ho is one of the most promising of our younger jockeys, sustained an injured ankle, and a slight injury to his back, and Alexander sustained cuts over each eye. Both are doing well. The great number of close finishes at the meeting just concluded made the judge’s task one of more than ordinary difficulty. Perhaps this was the reason for the delay in hoisting the decisions. By the disqualification of Lady Kotiripo, about 90 full-size punters were deprived of a champagne dividend and rather fewer benefited by Island’s placing.
