From Palmerston and Levin Gasworks stating they were unable to supply the Council with tar. BUILDING REPAIRS NEEDED. The Medical Officer of Health notified tire Council that an officer of the Health Department had inspected and examined a building situated in Grey Street, Shannon, owned by Mr D. O’Connor, Grey town, and had reported that the premises were unfit for habitation and that the owner should be required to make the following structural alterations, additions "or repairs to the said building, viz.. (1) ltenew leaky water storage, tank; (2) make premises weatherproof by repairing defective flushing around chimney. Th accordance with the certificate the'Council decided to serve notice calling on the owners to carry out within eight weeks from date of service the * structural alterations embodied in the certificate. The owner of the property wrote the Council in regard to the notice from the Department and stated ,that in regard to The tank the tenant should have notified his agent and it would have been attended to. He intended re-building within the next 15 months. —Decided that letter be held over for one month and that Town Clerk be instructed to see Mr Osborne, the owner’s agent, and arrange to have work carried out- immediately. A HEALTHY BOROUGH. The following quarterly report from the Inspector of Health (Mr J. W. Higgins) was submitted:—The Borough of Shannon has been fortunate in its immunity from infectious disease during the past quarter. Only two cases, of scarlet, fever have been notified. In both instances steps were taken to prevent the spread of infection. Complaints have not been numerous, but where these have been received the matters have been gone into and any necessary improvements have been asked for and obtained. Periodical inspections have been made: m various parts of the Borough, particularly in the business area, and of food premises. Generally speaking, sanitary conditions are a,s satisfactory as possible in Shannon, considering the big handicap the Borough labours under through not having a drainage system, and the unfortunate fact that the subsoil is not porous enough to greatly assist property owners with soakpits as the alternative. The; water supply scheme has been discussed with the Borough officers and at some future date, a sample, for analysis will be taken of the water proposed to he used. It would appear that the Council' intends to leave no stone unturned to provide the Borough with an adequate supply of pure wholesome water.
GENERAL. Cr. Murray moved that it he a recommendation to the incoming Council that sign boards be erected on streets and that estimates be brought down for same. Cr. Butt, reported that the water tank at the Recreation Reserve had been cleaned out but. th.ei water cannot run into it as the spouting has been broken down and needs repairing.— The Mayor said it was disgraceful the damage done at the Reserve, and that people had been lighting fires and had damaged the trees—Cr. Butt was appointed to attend to the necessary repairs and have gutters cleaned out, The Town Clerk reported he had ieceived a large number of complaints in respect to the sanitary work. Tlie contractor who had been away on bis annual leave, bad now returned and the complaints would be remedied. Tlie ranger handed in several names of owners, whose cattle had been straying, but all being first offenders, no mroceedings will be taken.
