GOLF CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Shannon Golf Club was held in the Council Chambers on Friday 'evening, there being a good attendance of members. Mr Anderson occupied the chair. The retiring president (Mr Anderson) in presenting the third annual report, stated that following a viery successful season in 1921 the Club has fully maintained its position and now occupies a prominent place among the activities of the district, Owing to a prolific growth of grass in the late autumn, the season did not commence until the middle of May and it was well into winter before the turf was down to golfing level. Conditions are more normal this year and the club should be able to' make an early start. There are now 33 financial members, a very satisfactory state of affairs. The financial operations of the club have resulted in an excess of expenditure over income of Is 5d and wie face the coming season with at balance of £lB 18s 7d, with some; subscriptions still to come l in. As in the previous season all the matches arranged for were not played. The following won medals:—Miss G. Goodwin (2), Mrs Saxon, Messrs Goodwin, Saxon and Bovis. An approaching competition on the opening day was won by Mrs Johnston. Two inter-club matches were played, the club being defeated by a Palmerston North team by 10 to 4, and repeated last year’s performance by defeating the Levin Club by a single game. These matches are not only very enjoyable, but arte: excellent experience. The club will be well advised io arrange more in Ibe future. The third annual ball Meld on June 20, as a social function, was one of the most pleasant ever held ih Shannon. The balance sheet for this shows a credit balance of £5 11s lOd. A hearty vote of thanks is due to the ladies and others who made it such a success. Suggestion have been made from time to time that we should obtain the servic.es of a professional cpach. This is very desirable, more especially now that members have had sufficient, experience; to feel the need of one. Whilst the executive may be willing to arrange matters, the club is not in a position to make any guarantee. It is, therefore, felt that if a professional is to be secured, the initiative should be taken by the iniembers themselves. It is greatly to he regretted that the club promises to be a nomadic one. Considering, however, the class of farming conducted in. the vicinity of Shannon, wer can hardly exptect to have it otherwise. We are, however, most fortunate in finding patrons, who are-willing to grant the use of their land that the good game may prosper. Thanks are specially due to Mr Barber, whose generosity during the last, two seasons has enabled the club to become firmly established. In conclusion he wished the mlembers a pleasant and successful season. Mr Murphy said the club was to be congratulated oni its position both financially and socially and he wished to thank Mr Anderson for the lengthy and fine report ..submitted, which was a true and good onle 1 .
These remarks were heartily em-. horsed by’ the members present. The following new members wlere ’• !i yelecled:—Mesdames Hosking and • •hon, and Messrs Tregnrthn,. Gab lord, Gavev, Hinton, Nelson, Greedy, Grylls and Grainger. Election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr Abbott; vicepresidents, Messrs All. Seifert, Goodwin, Barber and Liggins; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. H. Morgan (reelected); executive committee, president, secretary and Messrs Anderson, Murphy, Dinnie, H. Seifert,, Saxon, Bovis, Mesdames Morgan, Moynihan, Dinnie and Misses Roach and G. Goodwin; club captain, Mr H. Seifert.; auditor, Mr 3. T, Bovis (re-elect-ed); handicapper, Mr Murphy. / GENERAL. Messrs Anderson and Murphy reported that favourable arrangements had been made with Mr J. Liggins, of Tokomaru, for the use of his grounds at the top of Stout street extension, for links for the coming season. Mr Gagliardi moved that Mr Liggins’ offer be accepted and that he be written to thanking him.—Carried.
A ground committee consisting of the preseident, secretary, club captain, and Mr Anderson were appointed to meet, Mr Liggins, junr., to make arrangements re laying out the course. tt was decided to get the ground in ordier at once and members will be invited to use the links from a date to be advertised, the formal opening day to take place on May 5. The aranging of the competitions is to be left, in the hands of the executive committee. Mr King moved that it be a recommendation to the executive committee that more hole matchies be included. Carried. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Murphy, that it he a recomemnclation to the committee that the club be affiliated to the New Zealand Golf Association. The meeting then terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair and the outgoing officials.
