PRAYER FOR THE PREACHER
j In a new book, "The Negro Press ;of the United States,” Mr P. F. G. ; Detweiler includes the following example of a prayer delivered by a coloured parson to his congregation:— : “O Lawd, give Thy servant this morning de eye of de eagle and de wisdom of do owl; connect his soul with de gospel telephone in do central , skies; Ttiminate his brow with de sun of lieu ben; pizen liis mind with love for do people; turpentine his imagination; grease his lips with possum oil; loosen his tongue with de sledgehammer of Thy Power; ’lectrify his brain with de lightnin’ of tie Word; put ’petual motion in his arms; fill him plum full of he dynamite of Thy Glory; ’noint him all over with de kerosene oil of Thy Salvation, and sot i him on fire.—Amen!” i
