SEA MYSTERIES
What mystery of the seas lies behind the disappearance of the cvcav of the pleasure cruising yacht Antoinette of Monaco, avlio avus found abandoned recently Avith bullet holes in the masts and sails of Marseilles?
In some respects the circumstances recall the great unsolved sea mystery of the Marie Celeste.
On deck there were signs of disorder. The mast itself and the gaff of the mainsail were riddled with bullets, and some of the cordage had been shot arvay. The yacht’s name and port of registry were painted on the stern.
The derelict was towed into Marseilles and handed over to the port authorities.
A fishing fleet with nets out sighted a strange-lonking craft with sails set
and no controlling hand at the tiller. There was a slight, breeze, and her mainsail boom sAVung from side to side as the yacht pursued her erratic course.
A fisherman clambered aboard to investigate. Not a living soul avus to be found, not even a cat. Others joined him, and the fishermen together carried out a systematic search. The cabin revealed nothing save a small case containing two candles, a man’s jacket, and a travelling fug. There w r ere no papers of any kind to help the searchers in their quest.
