MANAWATU RIVER.
EROSION NEAR SHANNON BRIDGE. Reference to the continued erosion yhat is taking place in the Manawatu River, near- the Shannon bridge, was made in the report presented by.the engineer : (Mr Hickford) at. last week’s meeting - . of . the Manawatu County Council. Mr Hickford • stated that;H was quite, possible' that the next flood would tqke away- the old stop, bank at the end of Ferry Road.' The, ero- ■ sion was rapidly carrying away- the hanks down . -stream ,'towards tbs bridge, and already several, clumps of willows, had disappeared near the enu of the old Ferry, Road., At present the river' was not likely to- erode towards the -bank that was constructed last year: He recommended the Council to call tenders for* the erection of a stpp. bank from the ’ old ferry' cottage to : the. bridge approach. This would mean that the hank would pass through Mr Piggott’s property and diverting the road on to Mr Bryant’s’ property near: the approach, for two or three chains in order to keep back from: the river as far as possible. 'The 1 chairman, stated that there was now enough money in hand to undertake. the ' work and be proposed. that. tenders be called. Following some further discussion it was decided to. call tenders, and the matter was left in the hands, of Cf.'Barber.
