CHAUTAUQUA OPENS SATURDAY.
Now in its fifth season, Chautauqua is as big a draw as ever. The South Island tour has proved a veritable success, many centres reporting larger houses than in previous years. The Levin season will open in the Century Hall on Saturday afternoon next at 2.45 p.m., when the Australian Quartette will supply a musical programme consisting of selections from popular operas. This company consists of a strong combination of Melbourne artists in the fronk rank of their profession. Miss Constance Ne-ville-Johns is a gifted * soprano who not only excels in solo items, but is a tower of strength in the concerted numbers. Miss Stella Beckman is'a contralto' of rare tone, her rich, mellow voice being admirably suited to operatic part singing. The male members of the party are Mr B. E. Brudenall, tenor, arid Mr Andrew Lawson, bass, both soloists much above the average. The accompanist with the party, Miss Daisy Alday, A.L.C.S., contributes in no small measure to the success of the programme in the spirited and capable manner ih which she plays the .various accompaniments. The same company also provide the first portion of the evening, entertainment, the second hour being occupied by a brilliant Oriental spectacle presented by Julius Caesar Nayphe. Mr Nayphe carries a beautiful and rare collection of Oriental rugs and tapestries, which may be examined afterwards by thps.e interested. Season tickets admitting any member of a family to the whole eight sessions are now obtainable from any member of the local committee.
