SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.

OFFER OF A STATUE. At Tuesday’s Borough C °?" 1 C T ! 1 meetine Cr. Hyde informed the Council that while in Wanganui recently he had inspected a soldiers memorial whirh a firm there has for sale, ana from the ’particulars he had received felt convinced the statue suitable one for Shannon. The figure is of Italian marble, life size, sculptured in Italy and standmg on a New Zealand Coromandel grey gjamje pedestal. The. base measures 4ft 6m square, and rises to a polished stone 31t 2in by 3ft 2in by Ift 6in high, then breaking Ito the central polished shaft, 2ft 4in by 2ft 4in by 3ft 9in high. The top stone is 3ft by 2ft high. The total height from base to top of figure is 16ft. 1 The price quoted was £3OO. He would like to know what councillors thought about the matter. Councillors .were of the opinion that an effort should be made to settle the question of the Soldiers’ Memorial, and from the particulars Cr. Hyde had submitted they thought a personal inspection should ■ be made and get something definite to work on. / Cr. Murray then moved that Crs. Gardner, Spencer and Hyde should maek a personal inspection of the statue at Wanganui, with power to negotiate at bedrock price, and obtain terms and conditions.

Cr. Spencer said he would take councillors through in his car if the Council provided the benzine. Cr. Fargher said he was in favour of securin the statue, but he thought it would be better to give particulars to the public before doing anything. He did not approve of the Council securing it before they had the money. Cr. Murray: The matter has been hung up a long time, and he was in favour of acting straight away: He felt sure the people would rally round and pay it off. . He contended no real effort had been made to get the memorial.

The Mayor: I do not agree with that statement.

Cr. Fargher: I want the memoriab but I am opposed to getting it without having money in (hand. Other councillors did not think the public would allow a debt to remain on it, and thought it advisable to secure the stone at once.

Cr. Murray’s motion was then carried.

Cr. Spencer’s offer to take councillors to Wanganui was accepted with thanks.
