Mr and Mrs A. E. Hyde, who have been on, a motor tour through the Taranaki district, have returned to Shannon.

Mr T. Knutsen* who for the past three years, has be : en on the local post office staff, has received notice of his transfer to Woodville. As a result of the heavy- rain at Pohangina and Woodville, a big flood came do\im the Manawatu River on Saturday evening, with the result that the low-lying country towards Moutoa was under water.

As a mark ol' appreciation of the. good work done by the Borough Council, with its slender purge, in cleaning up and improving the grounds at the cemetery, a ratepayer, who is a working man, called at the Council offices on Mod ay and left a donation of 10/ towards / the cemetery fund. Will others follow this inspiring example?

Proceeding to Tokomaru the other evening a car driven by Mr Bert Wilkinson, who was accompanied by his wife, came into collision with a cow. The animal was on the side of the road, and as the car approached it evidently tried to jump over it, and in its attempt it broke the iron stays of the hood and radia!tor, also the wind-screen, Mrs Wilkinson receiving a nasty cut. on one, of her fingers. After aj quarter of am hour’s delay, they were able to proceed on their •way. .

On Friday evening next at the Maoriland ' Theatre the great film “Foolish Wivej>” will be screened. .Prior to the commencement of the picture, the Thompson Sisters will sing the song “Foolish Wives.” Mrs Minifie, wife of the Rev. Mr Minifie, underwent an operation in a private hospital at Palmerston North on Friday* and is progressing satisfactorily.

An unfortunate accident happened shortly after the excursion train left Plimmarton on the return to Shannon on Saturday evening, a) small':lad named Lemnie Lee having the fore-finger of his left hand crushed owing to a door of the carriage closing on it. First add was rendered and on arrival at Shannon he: was attended by Dr. Macdonald, who found the topjoint of the finger was broken and down to the second joint, split.

On Wednesday next the annual picnic of the) Shannon Methodist Sunday School will be held on* Mrs Byers’ 'property. There will be all kinds of games, sports, etc., and giyen a fine day a most enjoyable time should be spent. Daring the height of the flood on the Foxton Road on| Sunday afternoon, several small children were wading in the water near- the . cutting, when a little boy, two years of age, fell in the drain, which had nearly three feet of water in it. He was rescued by his little sisteV, six years of age, who jumped in to the drain, the water being up to her neck. Had she not acted promptly, the child would certainly have been drowned, as he; was quite exhausted. A gentleman who was passing eilong at once attended to the child, who quickly revived. This should be a warning to parents not to allow their children to go unattended to this spot when the flood water is lying about.
