KIRKSEY OUT-SPEEDS CARR.

AUSTRALASIAN RECORDS EQUALLED. IN 100 AND-220* YARDS. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Eight, thousand people watched the New Zealand amateur athletic championships at Athletic Park to.day. Most of the spectators were there to see the international spi'int events wherein Kirksey . (America), Carr (Australia) and Davidson and Wilson (New Zeaiand) conip'-ted. These events will long be’ remembered as classic struggles, in both of which American knowledge and pace won the day. The weather was cold and the track a bit heavy, through over, night rain, but with a fairly stiff breeze behind the .runners.. In the 100yds., Carr won his heat easily from Morgan (Qltago) with Davidsont(Auckland), who looked unwelQ, third. In' the second, heat-Kirk, sey and Wilson battled, for. 50yds., then, the-American went ahead. At the finish, Porrit (Wanganui) spui'ted into second place. The time for both heats was ten seconds.

In the final, Kirksey was slightly the quickest to start and at the 50yds. line was nine inches ahead of Carr, who then drew ahead slightly.. Then, In a thrilling burst for the tape. Kirksey triumphed by three inches, Carr vainly diving at the last moment. The time, 9 4_ssec., equalled the Australasian record of 30 years’ standing. Porrit was third and Morgan fourth. In the 220yds., Carr, easing up, conceded first place in his heat to Morgan; Kirksey was first in , his, with Davidson second. In the final, from a perfect start, Kirksey went I’apidly to the front, being challenged by Carr at the 100yds. mark, but after another 50yds., Kirksey again showed himself the better man and won by four feet.
