' (Received Thursday, 7.15 p.m.) ■ LONDON, Feb. 21. . t In the House of Commons Mr Maxton moved a resolution in favour of entitling every person to receive an old age pension at seventy, regardless of the means. Recipients'shauld\.not be penalised for thrift. •Mr Austin Hopkinson derided the motion, and asked where the„ money was coming from, adding that old age pensions were out-doqr relief underanother name, and would make paupers of everyone.' There were angry cries by the Labourites, Mr Kirkwood and others* 3 * shouting: “Mr Hopkinson is using a word which is an insult to our class,” Mr Lawson exclaiming, excitedly, “My father is drawing the olff. age pension, \ and he is as good as you.” j The Speaker called Mr Hopkinson j to order observing that he appeared j to be merely appealing for discord, I and must not make sarcastic charges, j The Chancellor opposed the motion on financial grounds, and the motion, : was defeated 280 votes to SOS.
