WATER SUPPLY FOR SHANNON.

POLLING DAY—MONDAY NEXT. THE SCHEME OUTLINED. On Monday next, February 26, a poll of ratepayers will be taekn for the. the purpose of enabling the Shanndh Borough Council to* raise a special loan of £II,OOO, with which .to instal •a water supply scheme for the bor'ough. The money will be used to construct a reservoir and intake, purchase ( all necessary material and lands and rights required, arid lay water-pipes to supply the inhabitants of the borough with water for domestic use and all ordinary purposes, to paythe preliminary expenses author-

ised under Section 4 (a) of the Local

Bodies' Loan Act, 1913, .and the first year's interest and sinking fund of the loan during the, construction of such work. The Joan will be repayable by means of a sinking fund within a period of 36J years from the raising of the loan. As security for payment of interest and sinking , fund in respect of loan, it is proposed to make a special rate of one penny in the £1 on all rateable property within the borough. It is also 1 proposed to pay out of the loan moneys preliminary and other expenses, the' cost of raising the loan and the interest and sinking fund of the loan during the first year. In connection with the- above, the following is an outline of the proposed scheme, which the Engineer (Mr Edwards) is quite satisfied is the best procurable. .He states the supply of water obtainable at the powerhouse site is immeasurably superior to all other possible sources, and will provide an almost unlimited quantity of first-class water at a, sufficient elevation to give a good working pressure. It is proposed to secure ' the water from this source by means of gravitation. Under this scheme the service main will be laid on private property. A longitudinal section of the selected pipe track from the proposed site of the reservoir to Grand Street, a line well under the virtual declivity,- has been secured.

It is "proposed to take the supply of water fro*m the concrete conduit immediately beneath the power-house in steel Bin pipes to the concrete reservoir about' 30 chains, more or less, down stream, which is to be sunk partially-in the ground, and from the reservoir,to the corner of Stout and ,Grand Streets in an Sin steel pipe. From there ttie water will be distributed in the various streets of the borough'. This pipe will deliver '754,128 gallons,of,water per diem. It will be seen that tlv amount of water is very ihxich greater than will be require*! for Shannon for many years • to come. The reservoir is of concrete, rool'eu. in with, corrugated iron, the | general dimensions to be 60. by 60 by ,■' 16 deep, provided with a 3ft,mid-wall, and all the necessary vvalves for. sup-' ■ply, stops, scouring valves and overflow. About two acres of land will be required.for the site, and as it will be alongside the Shannon East Road, access is assured. The reservoir will have V capacity of approximately 336,000 gallons. The pressure of water at the corner of Thompson and Bryce Streets';will, be 771 bto the square inch. * . It will' be seen from the above that , a big margin* of water will be available, which is always most satislactory especially in the case of fire, and also'the long lengths of small reticulation pipes to the higher levels i* more satisfactory and economical.
