RAILWAY CONTRACTS.
WELLINGTON, Last Night.
With reference to Mr. Veitch’s com-’*, plaints regarding lengthy locomotive* contracts, and the spending’ of large* sums of money outside the Dominion,/ the Minister of Railways says it has* been previously explained tha v c tho* purchase price of engines under orderin Great Britain is thousands or pounds less than they could b e manufactured for here. Mr. Veiteb nad also been previously informed tb‘ a t the Government had no option b\ a t to place the contract for 45 A.R. locomotives abrokd as, during the war period there were neither men nor • irQ n material to construct them in Zealand. The importation of these Engines did not affect the position o£ ' the New Zealand railway workshops- a s their pro ; 'gramme will keep. *£he whole of the shops busy for t)fr e next two years, while Messrs. Priir je Bros!’ have, stiu 16 locomotives', to deliver under their contract,, which, ‘-will take three years to complete. ,
