BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR. The first meeting of the Borough Council in the New Year was held in the Council Chambers on 'Tuesday, evening Present: The Mayor (Mr i Murdoch) and Crs. Hook, Butt, Hyde, j Fargher, Murray, Spencer and Gardner. •-> CORRESPONDENCE. From B. T. Curran, complaining ol damage done to her property owing to flood-water coming over the bank on the piece of land used by The Council as a pound. She said it had occurred twice within the past month, and stated if the Council sent a man along with; a horse and carl the trouble could be fixed in a few hours. If was resolved that Mrs Curran b& informed that the Council could not see its way to take part in the filling up~br "Hie bank, but had no objection to Mrs Curran doing the work at her own expense, the Council giving every facility for entering borough lands.From E. H. Crabb , Palmerston North, in reference to inspection by Council of cement pipes at Masterton. He stated developments have occurred which rendered it advisable to postpone the inspection for a while owing to the Cement Pipe Co. having practically sold to the Hume Cement Pipe Co., of Australia. It was the latter firm's intention to send an engineeracross specially charged with the duty of meeting borough councils and discussing with them the possibilities with regard to pressure pipe contracts. Their policy was when undertaking a conlraci to provide and lay pipes with their 'own skilled workmen, giving an absolute guarantee that results would be fully up to standard contracted lor. He pointed out that if the Council wished to proceed with the testing of the pipes at once they could do so.

After a discussion on the matter, it was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Hyde, that "the Council send delegates to inspe i the pipes at an early date. The Mayor and Crs. Gardner and Spencer wc;-.? appointed as delegates.

GENERAL. Resolved that tenders be called for the Council's horse shoeing. At a special summoned meeting of the Council, it was decided that Wednesday be the statutory half-holiday, in Shannon.

Cr. Fargher asked if anything had been done in regard to framing new-by-laws for bee-keeping in ihe< borough. The Mayor said Mr Martin, the Municipal Corporation solicitor, was preparing them. It was resolved that the Town Clerk be instructed to write MiMartin.

Cr. Hook drew attention to the b-i'- I ter in the "News"' in reference tn what was being done about the Soldiers* Memorial. The Mayor said he had made arrangements to canvass the district next week. It was decided that the roads j closed for grazing from Monday next | at 10 a.m. j The Council resolved that, the Conn-J cil take immediate action against, j persons failing to register their do ?s. Accounts totalling £36 13/9 wore passed for payment.
