The present position in regard to flre-hliglit in the Auckland district was described on Tuesday by Mr G. A. Green, a member of the local Fireblight Committee. He said that the blight was now fairly prevalent throughout I lie Waiteniata County, and in other Auckland districts, but the outbreak was not regarded as very serious. In every instance it was stiil shown by observations throughout.. the district that pear trees were more subject than apple trees to infection, and some types of apple trees were more prone to attacks than others. in some . of the districts the blight appeared to be more virulent in one season than in another, and in this respect the experience of America was being reproduced. It was quite evident, added Mr Green, that the main basis of elimination was the cutting out of hawthorns and of ail infected twigs and branches before the “ooze - ’ or suppuration stage was reached.
The report of the Wellington Public Library contains the following: A regrettable feature of the reference library’s working for the year has been the increasing amount of vandalism. Though the visitors are kept under surveillance this sort of thing is very difficult to prevent, and many books have been cut or altogether removed. One of the 1 recent discoveries was the removal of some twelve pages from a horticultural work. The portion removed referred to grafting. It is quite evident that the person concerned visited the library with one intention, as the leaves had been cut out with a pair of scissors. Adverse comment on this sort of thing apparently has verylittle effect on the persons who are responsible for the depredations, and the only hope of those interested is that as Fne destroyers sow so shall, they reap, with the even more fervent hope that itkmay not be long before the wrongdoer reaps, and that the harvest may he particularly heavy.
