PROGRESS AT MANGAHAO

POWER BOARD TO VISIT WORKS,

The question of the progress of the Mangahao hydro electric power scheme was mentioned by Mr D. W. Matheson, at the meeting of tlje Horowhenua Power Board on Tuesday. He stated that everything was going on satisfactorily so far as the Board was concerned, but one thing lie had given some thought to was the progress of the work at Mangahao, and whether the time stated—--12 months from now—would see the power turned on. He thought the Beard should ascertain for itself what was the likelihood of the Department’s promise being fulfilled. It would be a serious matter for the Board financially if the power was not ready in time, and he thought the Board should make a trip to the works early in the New Year and see how they were progressing.

Mr G. A. Monk, chairman, said just what attitude 1 they should take up in regard to united action with other boards it was difficult to say. So far as he could see the Horowhenua Beard was as far advanced with its work as any, and it might be for this" Board 1o take the initiative in ascertaining the position. The whole thing hinged on the getting of the dams finished at Mangahao. lie had heard experienced men say thet darns would not be ready, and the Department says they will. It would be- a serious matter for the Boards if the power is not, ready on time. He agreed with the suggestion to visit the works.

Mr A. Seifert stated if the excavating work was done, the concreting should be finished by April. If not, the floods -in the winter time would cause delay. A visit to the works would give some idea of things. Mr Matheson: We don’t want to collect the rate. All our plant will be at a standstill if the power is not

ready. Mr Seifert: The plant will deteriorate the same avS if it is in use.

Mr Overton (Engineer): Yes

It Was decided to make the trip early in January, the secretary to make the necessary arrangements.
