Shannon News FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1922.

The “Shannon News” takes the opportuntiy of wishing its many readers and supporters the compliments of the season. The “News” will not be published next Tuesday.

Now the roads have been thrown open for grazing, there are quite a number of complaints of stock damaging hedges, flower and vegetable gardens. We certainly think if owners are given the privilege of grazing stock on the roads they should be in charge of some responsible person to see that no damage is done. The flaxcutiers at the Whitamii mill ceased work yesterday, and the balance of the mill close down to-day.

During the course of the past, few days a large number of men from the hydro works have passed through Shannon on their way to different parts of the Dominion to spend their Christmas holiday.

A friendly tennis* match was played at Shannon on Wednesday afternoon between a team from Levin Tennis Club and a local' team. After a very enjoyable afternoon Shannon were victorious by il sets to 4.

Mr and Mrs Chapman, of Cambridge, .England, who are tourning the world, are at present visiting friends in Shannon. During the war they made it their duty to entertain New Zealand soldiers at their home in Cambridge, and they have had the pleasure of meeting several of the bovs again whilst in New Zealand.

The Shannon Cricket Club held a pea guessing competition with a view to raising money to enable them to purchase a new net. The competition proved a great success, sufficient money being obtained to permit them carrying out their object. On Tuesday evening a count was made of the peas in the bottle, there being 931 peas. Mr V. Pope was the winner with a guess of 915. Subscribers are reminded that the telephone exchange will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, but will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. only on Tuesday (Boxing Day). ~ '
