NEWS AND NOTES,
The Shannon school boys scored a decisive win in the O’Connor Cup
match last Saturday, and will app&- | rently take, some beating. Their dis- | play was a very creditable one. j The Horowhenua competition j matches will be resumed on Saturday, | January 6. The new Shannon team, Public Works, had their first match with We-
raroa on Saturday. The Weraroa team baited first, and Hemingson and Newth took ups the attack for the Works. The first-named bowled the belter of the two, and was more rei sourceful, four wickets falling to his lot. Newth pegged away and bagged
three. Bishop, Doidge and Burrows
went on in the later stages, and secured a wicket each, j Tiie bowling creases on the Shannon ground badly want attention. The foothold soon becomes worn and handicaps the howlers. This trouble develops with most -made pitches un-
less attended to regularly. It would J have been better had the pitches been j laid an inch lower in the first place. J Of the Weraroa batting McGill carI ried off the honours with a good con- , trib'ution of 37, made principally by 1 strong hitting on ' the leg side. j Pringle, who has had a run of had
, luck so far, got into double figures, and is bound to do better in later matches.
Harris and Morgan shaped best ol the works batsmen. After the first nine wickets had fallen for 10 runs, this pair got together and carried the j total to 36, when the innings ended j by Harris being caught.
j Pringle bowled particlarly well finWeraroa, getting five wickets for eight runs, and narrowly missed the hat trick. McGill was in evidence at
the other end, and got. three for 13. Sloan had his first turn at the crease this season and secured one for six. The Foxton-Y.~u.C.X match had an unexpected finish. Foxton made the small score, of 54, but, Y.M.C.A. only managed to reach 35, jbeing 19 in arrears on the first innings. Foxteii i failed badly against the Y.M.C.A. bowling in their second strike, and | were all out lor -23. This left Y.M.C.A.
| with 4 2 to get in 25 minutes, and the" j was done, mainly by a bit oi hard j hitting by Martin, who knocked up 34. I it was an exciting finish. Howe and Higgins proved a useuu i pair of howlers for Foxton and sej cured all the Y.M.C.A. wickets that , j felt during the afternoon’s play, j The Y.M.C.A. howling was well disj trihuted, Hudson and Auckram get-
i ting the, bulk of the wickets, whiis; ! Tingey, Field, Moodie and Harris also | had some success. Foxton seem to have an ever-chang-ing personnel in their team, .which ii not helpful to the success of the club. With their best side available, the seaside team should be capable of I making a good show. | The Y.M.C.A.-Shannon match, which
takes pi ace* on January 6 at Shannon, should be one. of the decisive matches o me second round. Y.M.C.A. won the. first game with Shannon, but the I :: m are determined to turn the tables at the next meeting and the: s>mu id he o. good game.
The grass on the Shannon ground was an obstacle to ground strokes in last Saturday’s game! The ball practically stopped dead, , but this was as fair for one side as the other. At the same time the. cutting of the grass would be appreciated,by the players.
