SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Hook, Gardner, Spencer, Hyde., Fargher and Richardson, CORRESPONDENCE.
No correspondence came to hand to be dealt with by the Council. ELECTRIC STREET LIGHTING. Mr Overton, chief electrical engineer for the Horowhenua Power Board, accompanied by Mr Stewart,
assistant engineer, waited on the Council, and submitted a plan of the fixture of lights to be erected in the borough in readiness for the power when available. After an inspection of the plan had been made by the councillors, it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, that the plan of fixing the lights as submitted by Mr
Overton aiul his associate be gone on with. The. Mayor stated these gentlemen were experts and knew more than the Council of What was required, and considered the Council were acting wisely to be guided by them. GENERAL.
It was decided that, owing to the date of the next meeting falling on Boxing Day, the next meeting be held on Thursday, December 21. Re complaint from Mrs Merwood in regard to cesspit, on her property not beinig properly' covered.—lt Was resolved that the Mayor inspect.
Cr. Richardson asked what was being done in regard to raising money to have the cemetery and reserves attended to.
Cr. Hyde said that the scheme he had brought forward (had been held up. He said the Mayor had interviewed Mr Voysey in regard to securing the assistance of the school children towards the scheme, but it had been decided that, owing to the approaching examinations it would interfere with their work, so it had been allowed to drop in the meantime.
It was resolved that in future the price of cemetery plots be raised to £2 10/. Cr. Hyde said he had received from G. Wilkinson an offer to cut the grass in the cemetery, provided he could have it for hay.—Carried. Cr. Spencer moved that the Borough roods be thrown open for grazing from Friday, December 15, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. until further notice, —Carried.
Cr. Hyde complained of the long delay in securing telephone communication with -Wellington, stating that recently it had taken him five hours to get connected up, and suggested that tin Postmaster be written to and see if it could not be speeded up. Cr. Fargher said the matter had been brought up before, and from his experience there was a .marked improvement.—The question was then allowed to drop. Cr. Spencer reported that he and Cr. Gardner had inspected the new patent tip for drays and they both considered it a splendid idea for road patching work, and would be the means of saving much time and labour, and recommended the purchase of one a;t £4 15/, which was agreed to
Accounts totalling £79 8/ were pass ed for payment.
