HOROWHENUA POWER BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The regular meeting of the Heron whenna Power Board was held on Tuesday, and was attended by Messrs it. A. Monk (chairman), A, Mackay, A. A. Brown, W. Barber, C. Kil&by, D. \V. Miitheson, F. U. Whibley and W. H. Gunning. CORHESPQNRENCE. •
Mr W. li. Blow, New Zealand Government Agent in Sydney, reported re calling tenders for hardwood required, by the Board, the expenses of his office in connection with: same being £1 13/. Received, the secretary stating he had written thanking Mr Blow for his work on the Board’s behalf. The State Advances Office state#,that i, authority had !been given prescribing the term for which £BO,OOO of tire, re-,/ ticulation loaniof £260,000 may be borrowed. A term of 20 years had been agreed to—Received. The Manawatu County Council agreed to the Board /erecting, poles in ( that district provided. s the position of . the poles were:approved by the County engineer.—Received. The Otaki Borough Council, offered/ a road transit vehicle for. sale suitable tor converting into a motor lorry for carrying material, etc—Referred to Engineer to deal with as he thought fit.
The Public Works Department notified that the Board’s license .had been forwarded to the Governor-General lor signature, and as soon as this was repeived the license would be gazetted. —Received, the. Chairman stating that the Engineer should be congratulated in pushing the matter through to its present stage. The Tararua Power Board wrote thanking the Board for information and assistance received from the members and officers of the Board. —Received.
Mr M. C. Vamham, Levin, wrote offering his services as architect or inspector of, works should the Boat'd require such an officer. On. the chairman’s suggestion the application was referred To the Engineer for consideration in the event of there being an opening for such an officer. An application for the position of motor driver was also referred to the Engineer.
The. secretary, was authorised to call a special meeting when intimation was received of the issue of the license, the meeting to fit in with the next ordinary meeting if possible. RE-ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. At 11 a.m. the first annual meeting was held for the re-election of chairman for the ensuing year. The clerk (Mr P. W. Goldsmith) presided and invited nominations. Mr Mackay proposed that Mr Monk be re-elected. He had shown great interest in the Board since its formation, and had done fine work as its first chairman.
The nomination was seconded by Mr Matheson, who said that besides the interest he ; had shown in the Board, Mr Monk had shown great consideration for the public. He thought the public fully realised this. Mr Matheson also referred to the highly satisfactory way in which the Board’s business had proceeded, but it was necessary to see that the Department pushed the work and kept it up to date.
Messrs. Whibley, Barber, Kilsby, Gunning also supported the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr Monk was declared re-elected amidst applause. He said he did not think, any man should take-up a position unless he was prepared to put his whole soul into it. He thanked the Board for its unanimous support at. all times, and felt proud at this latest instance of its confidence. OTHER BUSINESS. Mr A. A. Brown said it had been intended to secure land in different places in the Board’s district. Had anything been done yet? The Chairman said Mr Overton had been away, butj would no doubt report at ( next meeting. Mr Overton stated that he would be able to do so.
Replying to another question, Mr Overton said he .expected ( to. begin to come forward in,January, in, quantities of about 500 a month. Mr W. Barber; What about, a motor lorry? It is abojut time we were getting one. . The Engineer said :> he would -call tenders for motor equipment. A ,motor and trailer would be necessary.-
Mr Barber: Where will the Engineer start with the lines?
Mr Overton: From Shannon to Fox- , ton and Shannon to Levin, The.routej is already pegged out. j Mr Barber asked if the cost per pole had been worked out on the pur- ! chases made as a result of the Engi- i neer’s visit to Australia. .
