•Mr Finlayson, the Prohibition lecturer ,has booked "the Maoriland Theatre tor Tuesday evening, November sth.

Mr Linklater stated at his meeting in

Shannon that he strongly recommended building schemas by public bodies He quoted the Kairanga County Council, who had built houses lor their employees all over the county, and and they- had benefit!ed both the me* and the district.

In our report of Mr Link later's ad-dress-at Shannon we quoted Mr Logan as being the mover.ob die amendment of no-confidence in the Reform Government, whereas it should have been Mr G. Mercer.

Mr H. Flyger, Independent Liberal candidate for the Manawatu seat, will address the electors at the Maoriland Theatre this evening.

The roll ior the Manawatu electorate, including supplementaries, contains 7678 names, which is about, 400 more than last .election.

in this electorate there will he 87 polling places. Mr Delaney, the returning officer, has visited all the localities and made the necessary arrangements for conducting the voting. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr Watson, S.M., Joseph Hannan, alias Gannon, was charged with breaches of his prohibition order, also two charges of procuring liquor and one for being found oh licensed premises. On the first charge he was fined £& and costs, and oifl the remaining charges he was convicted and, discharged. Allen Harper and Robert Jocdin were also charged with supplying liquor lo Hannan knowing him to be a, prohibited person, on which they 'were fined £5 each and 7/ costs. The Magistrate remarked that supplying prohibited men with liquor was more serious than the prohibited person procuring liquor himself, and merited severe punishment.

1 A local aspirant for Parliamentary honours was making the usual appeal in an election meeting. At the beginning the candidate had given the impression that he was favourable to Prohibition. Later oil he had spoken in favour of State purchase and control. Then at the close the candidate was extolling the virtues of-Continu-ance. “I am riot a Prohibitionist,” de-. elated trie candidate, “but I have many friends and relatives who are; in fact, .1 have a brother who was a Rechabite for 52 years.” Immediately a questioner asked in a loud voice, “Was it through shicker?” The audience' roared with laughter, and when silence \Vas restored the candidate answered, “Oh, no.” *

On Saturday evening a large crowd gathered in Plimmer Terrace to hear Mr Price, “the human machine-gun,” give an address on Prohibition. Mr Jfinwno, a business man from Wellington, spoke first, and received a fair, hearing. On Mr Price mounting the box lie immediately received a hostile reception from, a section of those present, and it was quite a time before they would allow him/ to say. anything. When they would not let him address them, he invited questions, and eveii then was continually interrupted with interjections. He informed his hearers he had been speaking daily for the past nine, weeks, on many occasions addressing as many as two thousand people, and until that, evening he had always received a fair bearing. He appealed to those present as Britishers to give him: a bearing, but without avail. Altogether -the meeting w'as the noisiest held in -Shannon for some considerable time.

.Mr Fettle, president of the Wellington \\ .E.A., speaking at Hie meeting of ifie Wellington District Council, said “The time has arrived, no matter whai Government is in power, when the Association should have its full support. They should fully realise the

tremendous advantages of adult edu-

cation.”

Speaking at. the annual, meeting ol the Wellington District council, of the S\ .E.A. in Wellington on Friday evening, Mr A. E. Mander said the Munawatit Times, Levin Chronicle and the Shannon News had been of invaluable assistance in giving publicity to the movement and reporting the. various lectu.es. A unanimous vote of thanks was passed to the management of these journals, assistance of this kind being greatly appreciated. The florowheniia Racing Club has paid the Gov eminent LlrF) 18'8 in taxation under various beads on account of its recent meeting. This is a fairly substantial sum to be deducted from the proceeds of a- one-day meeting, the members of the club will hardly appreciate the Prime Minister’s .remark that the Government did not wish to. crush the small racing clubs. Cabbage trees are flowering profusely this season, and just now present a fine appearance. Native flora of other varieties blooming, notably the clematis. Later in tbei season the ratas will add a dash of scarlet to the surrounding green. In localities where large numbers of ratas are located, a striking sight is presented, and from a distance it appears as though a large red covering ha dbeen laid over an area of the greenery of the forest.
