Much indignation is being expressed at the action of certain people who disfigured the door of St. Andrew’s Church at Wanganui on Saturday night or Sunday morning last. When the church was about to be opened for morning service, it was discovered that a whitewash brush had been at work, the door having painted on it advice to vote for Continuance and to' drink beer of many X quality. The work had been done very thoroughly and very deliberately. At the meeting of the British Association in September, Professor Brogger gave an account of the Viking ship of Oseberg in Southern Norway. The tumulus in which it was found was the hurying-place - of a lady of high rank who died about the middle of the ninth century, probably of the queen. The queen and her servant were laid within a special burial chamber in the ship, and supplied with the most complete equipment for the future life yet known in' Northern Paganism. A four-wheeled waggon, four sledges, beds, looms, buckets, and a complete kitchen furnishing, with 14 horses, four dogs, and two oxen were among fhe things provided. • Such a collection throws an important light on the art of Norway, and, indeed, of Europe during the ninth century
