NOXIOUS WEED NUISANCE.
CROWN THE WORST OFFENDER
At Saturday’s meeting of the Horowhenua County Council, Cr. McLeavey drew attention to the increasing nuisance of noxious weeds. At one time lie knew of only a few isolated blackberry bushes on the roads, but now they were to be found almost everywhere. If something was not done these and other weeds would
take possession of the country. ■, The Chairman (Cr. Monk): What you ask for is that the attention of the Stock Department be called to the matter and asked to take more stringent measures.
Cr. McLeavey: Yes. The Chairman said the Crown- was the worst offender as regards the clearing of noxious weeds. Five years ago he had occasion to draw the attention of the Crown to a blackberry bush grown on Crown land near the speaker’s farm. Nothing was done, and. now there were hundreds of bushes, which were spreading every year. In the case of a country road adjoining Government land, such as the railway, he thought the Council should clear the whole width of the road.
The Council decided to write the Stock Department and draw attention to The weed nuisance.
