Mr H. T. Gorrie, who (lied suddenly 6n Saturday, was for a number of years vice-president of the Auckland Racing Club and had previously held office as president. Mr Jas. Bull’s Ruddy has been "tubed,” and if the operation is successful he may stay better in future. Mongonui, the ancient and only daughter of Carbine in New Zealand, and owned by Mr .T. A. Coghill, has a filly foal, by Rangitero. The Stewards’ Handicap winner, Glentruin. is an English-bred marc bv Sunflower 11., a daughter of Sundridge, a very speedy horse, which has bred on •successfully. One of his sons, Sunsfar, was a Derby winner, and later earned fame at the stud, whilo another of them is Absurd, who has made a great name as a sire of speed in New Zealand. G. Young was fined £5 by the starter for alleged misbehaviour at’ the start cf the New Zealand Cup, and P. Keene a similar amount for breaking through 'the barrier at the start cf the Linwoou Handicap. The No:Ur Island trai i.T. P. Quinlivan, who turned out Scion in such good order for the New Zealand Cup on Saturday, has an enviable record in connection with that event, as he also prepared Bridge and Midnight Sun when they won in the colours.of Mr lv J. Watt. ’
R. Reed, who rode Scion in the New Zealand Cup on Saturday, has been one of the leading horsemen in the Dominion for several years past, but he had never previously been in a place in the New Zealand Cup. A trio of English-bred lillies imported by Mr Vivian Riddiford reached Wellington recently by the steamer Tainui. The youngsters were all foaled in 192.1, and their breeding is as follows: —Bay filly, by Blink (son of Sunstar) from Favcrolis; chestnut filly, by Somme Kiss (son of Sunstar) from Grendall Chick; brown filly, by Diadumenos (son of Orbv) from Lady Mavca.- The fillies were landed in good condition, and will be turned out at the Hutt and given time to acclimatise prior to being put info- training. Mr Riddiford is at present on his way out from the Old Country.
The New Zealand Cup winner, Scion, was bred by Mr I. G. Duncan at Waikanao Stud, find was purchased by Messrs V. and E. Riddiford as a yearling for GOOgns. He is by Boniform from Lady Jean 11., an imported mare by lan from Bcttyfield, a grand-daughter of Springfield, a noted English sire, which also figures close up in the pedigree of Otteiden, the dam of Boniform. Scion started ten times as a two-year-old, for one win and six lots of place money. He made his first appearance at Trcntham in the spring, being unplaced in wliat was subsequently shown to be a good class field as it included Winning Hit (second), The Hawk, Grotesque, Anomaly and Palestrin'a. At three years he raced with better ’uck, as he won four times, including the Empire Handicap at Wanganui and the King George Handicap at Ellerslie.
