NOTES ON THE GAME

The Horowhenua fixtures will con*

linue to-morrow, when Shannon will meet the newly-formed Public Works team at Shannon, and Y.M.C.A. will play Weraroa. on the Levin Domain. The Public Works team is as yet an unknown quantity, but it is stated to have several more than average players among its membership, and may be relied upon to give a good account of itself. The promoters deserve to be congratulated on the formation of the club. On its showing last Saturday, Shannon jdoes not. appear to be so strong a side as last season, but allowance has to be made for the absence of two of its best men in Mayne and Merwood. Several new names appeared among last Saturday’s team, showing a considerable change in last year’s personnel. However, the season's play lies, ahead, and there is ample time for the team to show its best.

Shannon’s second innings against Y.M.G.A. last Saturday was one of the best fights against time seen on the Levin ground. With 95 runs between them and victory, and little more than half an hour to get them, it looked a remote chance, but not to players of the type of Grainger. Randall and Stewart, who were within four of the required number when time was called. It was a great effort against odds, and another example of the .glorious uncertainty of the game.

McKenzie, Field and Auckram were the mainstay of the Y.M.C.A. batting in the first innings, and in the second. attempt Moody, Hudson and Fletcher notched double figures: The batting of the team looks like being stronger than last season. Moody, who is playing with Y.M.C.A. this season, promises to be a useful addition, and Harris, (who batted without success on Saturday) is also liable to make runs, and is a good field. Another recruit is Tingey, who plays well, and probably the best of the school eleven. Randall bore the brunt of the Shannon attack on Saturday, and came through the first innings with eight for 25, a good' performance. Grainger is handling the ball well, and Stewart, who upset not a few wickets last season, is sending dowln as awkward a ball as ever. Field had a day out for Y.M.C.A. on Saturday, and besides shaping well with the bat, secured an average of five for 17 with the ball in Shannon’s first innings. Pram, who takes some 'moving when he gets his eye in, had no luck with the bat on Saturday. Mason’s physical handicap does not prevent his taking a hand in the is a keen sport. Foxton signalised its entry into the competitions by beating Weraroa last Saturday, and thoroughly deserved the win. The team will have a bye to-morrow.

Reay, of Foxton, is more than a useful all-round player. After smiting the Weraroa bowling to the tune of 33 runs, he captured six of the visitors’ wickets for 30, and finished off by scoring 14 in his team’s second innings.

Morgan, Nye, Kruse and Westwood batted consistently for the home team. Saturday’s success should do much to encourage the club. The; outfield of the Foxton ground is very rough, and some attention in this direction will be apprecated by visiting teams. A little filling and levelling at the batting creases is also required; Although Claridge notched 20 and Patrick 15, the Weraroa batting was disappointing, and there will have to be an improvement if the team is do any good. A little more practice would do no rarm. Pringle, than whom few if any bowlers in the whole competition

came out with a better average last season, was obviously out of form, although three wick Is fell to his lot. A few games should see this player performing as well as ever with both bat and ball.

Weraroa is lucky in having the services of Patrick this season, a member of the well-known cricketing family of Christchurch. He will undoubtedly prove a source of strength to both hatting and bowling departments.

Claridge’s wrong ’uns were a useul asset on Saturday, and accounted ’or eight wickets in the two innings.

The Weraroa team for to-morrow includes Casey, Nees and Conder, who Avere not playing last Saturday. This trio will strengthen the side considerably, which should put up a good fight, with Y.M.C.A. The following will' represent Shannon against, P.W.D. at Shannon on Saturday: Stewart-, Grainger, Merwood, Randall, Parsons, Harris, Abbott, Johnstone, Prain, Hunt, Ellwood, Mason (twelfth man). Game commences 2. p.m.

The following players will repre-

sent the Public Works Cricket Club against Shannon next Saturday, , at Shannon: H. Burrows (captain), S, Newth (vice-captain), V. Pope, T. Mason, J. Doidge, J. Holden, P. Morgan, C. Morgan, R. Terry, W. Pieard, R, Bishop; W. Grey, twelfth man. All players are requested to be on the ground at 1.45.
