SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, when the following were present: The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Hook, Gardner, Spencer, Butt, Richardson, Fargher, Murray,

CORRESPONDENCE. From A. Merwood, re sanitary in-

spector’s request that cesspit and satisfactory drainage was to be made at his residence, complaining that a cesspit was dug about a month ago and left in a very unsatisfactory way, just a ladder being thrown across the top, which is very dangerous where children are. The old cesspit is full of stagnant water, and being open at the sides, the stench has been very bad lately. He asked that the Council give the matter its immediate attention.—Cr. . Spencer undertook to see that the work is carried out at once.

From the Shannon Cricket Club, replying to letter from Council of the 18th re horse lawn mower for municipal work, enclosing quotations for machines of various sizes, and stating if the Council is unable to procure a machine for this season the management committee df the Cricket Club have come to the conclusion that the

only way tO' meet the difficulty is to employ a man for half a day per week until about the end of January, : at a cost of 8/ per half day, to exit the grass with a hand machine within a radius of 30 yards of pitch, the aggregate cost of this scheme being estimated at £7 to £B, and the club

would like to know if the Council could see its way clear to finance it.— On the motion of Cr. Richardson, seconded by Cr. Butt, it was decided that the Shannon Cricket Club be written to stating that the Council will contribute £3 10/ towards cutting the grass.

Fropi W. McKenzie, asking for connection with the Borough’s proposed water supply.—Received. From Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce re shipping arrangements through Foxton, stating that as expenses will be incurred, asking if the Council will be willing to make a contribution.—The Mayor moved that the Chamber be written to asking what amount the Council is expected to contribute.

From P. Gill, asking if the Council have any objection to him taking up the present concrete in front of his new shop in course of erection and putting down a new concrete footpath in accordance with the Borough by-laws, and would the Council allow any proportion of the cost.—Cr. Gardner moved, and Cr. Butt seconded, that the Council grant the sum of £3 for asphalting the whole Width of path along the whole length in front of new shop, the work to be done in a satisfactory manner. ROADMAN’S REPORT.

The roadman reported that during the past month he had finished metalling Vance Street and half of Venn Street, which was in had order. He had ploughed a strip on both sides of part of Clapham Street from Grey Street to Stout Street, and had removed the spoil so as to allow the water to get off the road. Also the drains on the Foxton Road had been cleaned out, and a drain cleaned and deepened from Blind Creek to Stansell’s drain, and the drains cleaned out in Graham, Vogel and Margaret Streets. He. also reported having trimmed in the metal on the Foxton Road and Grand Street, and was at present trimming in a portion of Stafford Street.

GENERAL. It was resolved that, owing to the Council’s financial position not being such as/ to permit them keeping on two men, Mr H. Butt be given a fortnight’s notice. Cr. Spencer moved, and Cr. Murray seconded, that applications for purchase of the two workers’ cottages close at the Council’s next meeting on November 14, when the ballot will also be taken.

Cr. Fargher moved, and Cr. Spencer seconded, that all outstanding rates must be paid before January 21, 1923, after that date 10 per cent will be added.

Resolved that the roads be again closed from. Monday, November 6. Accounts totalling £196 4/4 were passed for payment.
