NEW ZEALAND CUP ON SATURDAY
With, fourteen horses likely to face the starter in the New Zealand Cup, the old established race gives every promise of keeping up its past tradi-
tions. Trespass, with 7ib penalty, figures as top weight, and in him and Tenterfield Mr W. R. Kemball has a decidedly useful pair. Royal Star and Foo Choiv have both got through solid preparations in their public essays, and in track work Foo Chow has shown to more advantage than last year’s winner, and everything points to him putting up the race of his life. Cupidon has not done a great deal of fast work since his return from Aus-
tralia. He looks in nice order, and will lack nothing on the score of stamina. In this respect he may have something of a pull on most of his opponents. Royal Box took with him a great reputation from Trentham
and is likely to go out favourite. He has evidently come through a searching preparation, and promises to be one of the hardest to dispose of. His stable companion, Scion, may form a worthy second string for Mr Riddiford’s stable, and should be capable of' seeing out the full journey. Festivity, Kilgour, Equitable and Almoner have not a great, deal to recommend
them, but Muraahi is assured .of a fairly strong following. Cupidon has come strongly into favour for the N.Z. Cup. He was backed recently for a fair stake, coup-
led wih Box Seat for the Trotting Cup. A private letter just received from Hector Gray says he was given a pleasant surprise by Lady Cunliffe Owen, for whom he was riding. She asked
asked his opinion about backing her horse heavily, hut he declared the horse could not win. Gray said if she intended -backing it he would prefer to “look on” and let someone else have the mount. The owner accepted his advice, and the horse ran third, the next day Hector declared his mount was fit, and could win. Her Ladyship backed the horse heavily, and duly landed. A little later on he received a telephone message from a garage, and was invited to call. On
his arrival there he was asked by the grateful lady to pick out the finest car in the garage and take it as a gift. The New Zealand jockey sorted out a £2OOO car and drove home in high glee. Gray’s opinion is that the New Zealand trainers know a good deal more about the preparation of
horses than they do in England, where their methods are obsolete. His son Joe is following in his father’s footsteps, and will shortly be ready for his first, mount.
