ELECTION NOTES.

MR LINKLATER AT! KAIRANGA,

Upon the opening of his campaign on Wednesday evening Mr Linklater, the Reform candidate for Manawatu, addressed, a large and attentive audience at the Kairanga Hall. Mr D. Gollis occupid the chair, and in a few well chosen eulogistic remarks introduced Mr Linklater to the audience, and briefly outlined his career in. local body matters.

Mr Linklater, before delivering his address, said how much he regretted Mr Newman’s retirement, what a good member he had been in the House, and how ably he had filled the position as member for the district.

His speech followed the lines of the Reform platform, and he compared the leaders of the three parties, pointing out that the leader of the Liberal Party could not hold his party together, whilst the leader of the Labour Party, Mr Holland, formed nearly all his ideas from foreign sources. Mr Massay, on the other hand, had guided the country successfully through the war years and slump period, and was now the only leader capable of and fitted for the continued leadership of the country. Various charges which have been levelled against the Government were dealt with, and he pointed out how liberal the Reform Government really was in its legislation, and how the country had prospered under it. At the conclusion of his speech a number of questions were asked and were answered satisfactorily. Mr Mitchell then proposed a very hearty vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Linklater, which Was carried unanimously, even before the chairman had time to put it. to the meeting.

, Mr Linklater, in returning thanks, said he looked with pride to what the Reform Government had done for the country, and. he was proud to be standing as a Reform candidate.

Meetings of Mr Linklater’s Shannon supporters are called by advertisement for Monday and Tuesday next. Mr Linklater met his Levin executive on Tuesday afternoon, Mr Elliott, of Bulls, chairman of the executive for the electorate, being in the chair.. There was a fair attendance. Mr Linklater reported that he had met his supporters in Shannon that morning, and (a committee had been, set up. Organisation of a similar kind was going on right through the district. The Levin representatives reported that progress at this end of the district was. satisfactory. The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) will give an open-air address in Shannon on Saturday night at 7.30 when he will deal with the housing question.
