SPORTING.

The chestnut gelding Olynthus was schooled over hurdles one day last week, at Awapuni, and jumped satisfactorily. The two-year-old Ralston (Boniform —Peace), which is trained by T. Quinlivan for Lady Jellicoe, ran unplaced in the Taita Handicap at the Trentham meeting.

The Shag (Panmure-Cormorant), which won the Two-year-old Maiden at the Canterbury Park races, is owned and trained by George Price. The ancient Mapping ran a close second to Haligan in the Moumahaki Stakes at the 'Waverley meeting, his supporters receiving a, substantial second dividend. Wapping is trained by H. King, at Feilding. The Foxton-trained Otauru Kid followed up his Marten and Wanganui successes by easily accounting for the opposition in the First Hurdles at Trentham. Passenger, which was favourite, did not run up to expectations.

Of North Island-trained horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup none are doing a more thorough preparation than Insurrection, and On each successive occasion that Kilbroney’s son is saddled up in public he looks better. Although Royal Box is at a very short price for the New Zealand Cup it would not surprise some persons who

profess to know to find Scion a runner, and well fancied by his trainer, for the big southern handicap. The Taranaki-trained Muraahi, which recently came into favor for the New Zealand Cup, is a five-year-old gelding, by Campfire, from Ineura, by Maniapoto. He won five races in moderate company last season, but his chief claim to notice rests on bis form at the Wanganui meeting last month when he won the Higgle Handicap. J. Gibson has Santiago in good fettle at present. He ran second to Joy Ride in the Rimutaka Hack, at Trentham, and on the second day won the Tararua Handicap. The son of San Fran will probably race at the Riccarton fixture next month. Santiago is owned by Mr Geo. Trevor. Santonio, also trained by Gibson, put up a smart performance im winning the Ruahine Handicap.
