ELECTION DAY.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7. DAIRY CONTROL BILL HELD OVER. Wellington, October 28. A statement by the Premier regarding the modest legislative programme remaining, shows that the session can easily be completed by Monday night. This enabled Mr Massey to announce that the date of the general election will he Thursday, December 7. The most interesting feature of the Premier’s announcement was that relating to the Dairy Export Control Bill. In regard to this most important and most contentious of the remaining Bills, he said cabinet had met that morning to consider what should be done. “We have decided to hold it over until next session.” Hear, hear.) There was a certain amount of opposition to it, but I am bound to say that both in the House and in the country, there was a strong majority in favour of it.” Sir John Luke: “A very generous opposition.” The Premier added that if the Bill had been proceeded with, the process would certainly have taken some days and the result would not have given satisfaction. Therefore, the Government thought it much better to have the Bill thoroughly considered during recess, when all those interested could arrive at a satisfactory solution of their present differences. The Government would be quite prepared to go on with the measure next session, and hie could promise that it would he introduced early. He hoped and believed they would be able to do something in the interests of the dairy producers and country, generally. Mr McCombs: There’s a Bill standing in my name. The Prime Minister (emphatically): it can stand. (Laughter.)
