HOROWHENUA CRICKET ASSOCIATION.
COMPETITION FIXTURES ARRANGED.
A meeting of the Horowhenua Cricket Association was held in Shannon on Wednesday. Mr H. Hook (president) was in the chair, and the following delegates were present: Messrs. H. Murray and R. Martin (Y.M.C.A.), L. Randall and F. Main (Shannon), G. Thomas and J. Hall (Weraroa), R. Bishop and V. Pope (Public Works Club), W. Nye (Foxton), and A.
H. Morgan (secretary). j Mr Bishop explained that the Pub- i lie Works Club had just been formed, and it wias intended to enter the senior competition. , The new club was given a hearty ; welcome by the other delegates. !
, A letter was read from the Foxton Club stating it was hoped to enter a Wednesday and a Saturday team in the Horowhenua competitions. PRIMARY SCHOOLS CUP. Mr J. O’Connor, of Weraroa, wrote accepting the position of sole selector of the Horowhenua rep. teams. Mr O’Connor also stated that he was presenting a cup for a primary schools’ competition. He thought the Association could do more for the boys than they had done in the past. T!he position as far as he could see was this: Many boys were leaving school each year and were lost- to the game because 'there was no competition for them to play in, and as it was these boys .they had to look to to take the place of senior players in a few years, lie thought a big effort should be 1 made to keep them in the game. Mr O’Connor also suggested that the President’s Cup for juniors be made a challenge cup for one year at least. This would give clubs a chance to organise, during the season. Next year it may be possible to start a competition.
Mr Thomas explained that Mr O’Connor’s Cup was to be a challenge cup for primary schools up to the sixth standard. The trophy would be presented to the Convent School, Levin, and it was open to any primary school in this portion of the Horowhenua district to challenge for it. Mr O’Connor left it in the hands of the Association to draw up rules to govern the competitions.
Members considered that the donor was deserving of thanks for his encouragement of school cricket, Mr Randall pointing out that the fostering of school cricket was very important for the future of the game, Mr O’Connor’s offer was accepted with thanks, and a sub-committee was appointed, consisting of the Shannon delegates, to draw up rules for the competition, same to be submitted to the Association at next meenting. GENERAL. The chairman stated in regard to the cup he was presenting, for a junior competition, there was so far only one team entered, and he was prepared to hold it over till next season, when it may be useful in the senior competition in event of a change in the trophy to be competed for.
The question of the commencement of the southern competition was mentioned, and it whs decided that the Association fix the opening and arrange fixtures.
Mr Randall stated that something should be done by the Association for providing material, and especially bats, for rep. matches. It was unfair to expect clubs to provide bats for these games. The chairman said he would be pleased to present a bat to the Association for this purpose in lieu of the cup which he intended to present for a junior competition.
The chairman was thanked for the offer, and the Association decided to purchase a second bat, players in rep.
teams to provide the necessary pads and wicket-keeping gloves. It was decided that Christmas and New Year Saturdays, also the Saturday previous to Anniversary Day and Easter Saturday be non-playing Satur(days. In event of rep. games, club matches on those dates to be postponed. UMPIRES APPOINTED. In accordance with the motion passa,t last meeting, the following umpire were nominated: Shannon, Messrs. Mason, R. Sands and A. Merwood; Y.M.G.A., T. Fletcher; Weraroa, C. Symonds, R. Broughton. The Public Works and Foxton clubs stated they would make their nominations later.
