HOROWHENUA COUNTY BRIDGES.
PROSPECT OF GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. Tj.ie prospect of getting assistance towards improving the condition of the Horowhenua county bridges was contained in a telegram received m Saturday’s meeting of the Council from Mr W. H. Field. M.P., as follows: — “The Minister of Public Works is recommending Cabinet and Parliament to contribute £2 for £1 towards the cost of repairs on the Horowhenua main road bridges, including the Otaki bridge. The Public Works statement and estimates come before the House for consideration on Tuesday next.” Cr. Bro'adbelt: It is only a Minister’s recommendation. Mr Goldsmith (County Clerk): But it looks healthy. The chairman (Cr. Monk;. I assume it refers to the whole of our bridges. Our ways and means are restricted, and we may have difficulty with our share of money to do the work. Ohau is in the most serious condition of any of our .bridges, and the public must understand that the county money to be spent on the bridges will have to be taken from other works in the respective ridings.
