The Bishop of Southwark, Dr. Cyril Forster Garbett, began his annual walking tour recently when, wearing his purple cassock and carrying his pastoral staff, he visited the Rural Deanery of Reigate .Surrey. During his ten days’ tour he passed through 22 parishes, visiting the aged and sick, chatting with cricketers on the playing fields, and meeting some of the parishioners of Buekland at the .Tolly Farmers publichouse. The bishop, who is one of England’s tallest clerics, has been a great walker since his curate days, fie is fond of making surprise calls in his diocese, taking to the road and chatting .with tramps and hawkers. He covers-usually not more than four,miles a day in his annual tramp, for much of his time is. taken up with preaching short sermons at crossroads and visiting schools and hospitals.
