BOWLING SEASON OPENS.

A RECORD GATHERING

Although the weather had been anything but fine, the Shannon Bowling Club were fortunate in having t an ideal day fori their official opening on Wednesday last, and the function was the most successful yet 'held. A record number of visitors were present, .there being no less than eleven visiting rinks, viz., Palmerston North (4), Levin (3), Foxton (3), and Otaki (1). Five local rinks participated in the play, while at least three were unable to get a game. The green presented a very animated appearance, the full green being occupied by bowlers, and the numerous seats were well filled by onlookers. The ladies provided a very enjoyable afternoon tea, which was a large (r----der, owing to the big attendance, and was all that could be desired. The president, Mr W. Mclvegg, on belfalf of the Club, gave a hearty welcome to the visitors, in the course of which he stated that bowling was becoming our national summer sport., like Rugby was in winter, and that New Zealand had. proved she could hold her own m b- ih. He thanked the Ground Committee for the excellent work they had done in getting the ground ready for the players, and had it. not been for the recent rain the green would have been much more improved. He also thanked the secretary (Mr Murphy) for the good work he had done in the interests of the club. Several new members, he stated, have been enrolled this year, to whom he extended a hearty welcome. He 'also, wished to congratulate Mr Knowles, winner of last year’s championship singles, also Mr T. Shannon, runner-up, who, he stated, was a. first-year bowler and had done remarkably well in being able to defeat the older players. The champion pairs were won by Mr Murphy and himself. He then called on Miss McKegg to throw the kitty and roll the first bowl, after which he declared the season open.

Play was then commenced, there being 64 bowlers on the green, the following being the scores of the various rinks: —

Trott (Palmerston North) 33, v. F. Whibley (Foxton) 8. Radford (Manawatu) 21, v. Brown (Levin) 20.

Murray (Shannon) 27, y. Stephenson (Palmerston North) 12. Gunning (Shannon) 22 v. Nye (Foxton) 21.

Wallace (Tferrace End) 30, v Knowles (Shannon) 13.

Fargher (Shannon) 21, v. Christie (Foxton) 11. Suhan (Levin) 28, v. McKegg (Shannon) 15.

Harris (Levin) 24, v. Bills (Otakt) 16.

At the coned! usio'n of the play, Mr R. Edwards, on behalf of the visiting bowlers, thanked the Shannon Club for their kindness and courtesy, and stated they had all spent a very enjoyable day. He also thanked the ladies for the refreshments provided, which were excellent. He then called for cheers for the club and ladies, which were heartily given.
