HOROWENUA BEATS MANAWATU.
A MODERATE DISPLAY
The third match between these Unions took place at Palmerston North on Saturday, and ended by Horowhenua winning by 27 to 19. This gives Horowhenua two wins out of the three games against our nprthern neighbours this season.
Saturday’s game’was of a scrambling nature, but the ‘ .visitors gave much the better display. The home team drew first blood, however, when after a series of intermediate scrambles, Parsons, at live-eighths, carried the leather over the line, Swainson converting. Then the red and blues took a turn at the attack, and scored, and Jacob, with a good kick, made the score 5 all. The hall was bouncing very trickily. With a long kick and a passing rush up |the side-line, the reds swamped the Manawatu team and Johnson, the Horowhenua full-back, scored a try. The kick failed. They still contrived to keep possession, but a likely passing rush ended when Broughton* who had a clear run, missed the ball on the rebound, and retrieved too late. In a few minutes, however, R. Moynihan, his partner, eluded Swainson and crowned a good effort. Jacob kicked a poster. Horowhenua 11—5. For a while the greens more than held their own, and then the game went into reds’ territory, whose defence was not good enough to stop Leeder, who dashed on top gear past the best of them, and' got over. Swainson made a good attempt with the kick, but the ball went just outside the uprights. The spell ended with the score: Horowhenua 11, Manawatu 8. Replay opened with Tana, the hefty Hui Mai lock, scoring after a scrum on the line. The kick failed. Then three greens got near enough to their objective to allow Swainson to kick a penalty goal, and the scores read: 11—8 in favour of Horowhenua. Another good attempt was made by the same player from nearly hall-wqy, but the ball, though accurately directed, lacked sufficient “boot,” and it fell under the cross-bar. Then Koro scored lor the leading side, and Jacob made no mistake with the kick, thus putting Horowhenua eight points in the lead, and another live points were added when R. Moynihan and Jacob had had another say. T. Moynihan ran the red score up to 27 points with a good try, the kick
proving resultless. Then came a change in the tactics of the greens, who made a belated effort to retrieve an almost hopeless position. Bucknell swung through the. crowd and scored in a handy position, but. Swainson was unable to improve it. Immediately afterwards Bucknell' repeated the performance, Swainson compiling two more. The game, refereed by Mr Hands, thus ended: Horowhenua 27, Manawatu 19. THE COMBINED TEAM.
