RECORD TUNNELLING FEAT
(From Our Own Correspondent)
A tunnelling record was put up for the month of August by Nash’s party in the No. 1 Tunnel. The party, which comprises seven men, pierced the tunnel a distance of 202 feet in addition to erecting 74 sets of timber and putting in a “lay-by” or tram track, during the period stated. The No. 1 Tunnel is now pierced over 28 chains from the Arapeti end. Assistant-Engineer Murrell and Mrs Hurrell have returned to their Arapeti residence after an absence of over 'a month on the Shannon side of the range. Ghainman Hughie Masters is also back in the Camp. Another Camp dance was held in the __ Y.M.C.A. Hut on Saturday night and a good! number thoroughly enjoyed participating in the . light fantastic. Both floor and music were excellent. The daily motor service from and to Shannon instituted on September 1 is'a distinct advantage and if only the mail were Jinked up with it the isolation of the Camp would be practically reduced to a minimum. Several wives and families have joined their husbands at the Camp recently and the need of a school is more acute than ever. The Education Board agreed to commence in a portion of the Y.M.C.A. Hut several weeks ago, and why the long delay no one seems to know. Rock has at last been reached on the site of the western side of the core wall of the Arapeti dam. The strata is about 60 feet from the surface and it is anticipated it will provide a satisfactory foundation for the base of the concrete wall. r The ..Y.M.C.A. Recreation Hut continues to be the social attraction of the Camp. Pictures are screened twice
weekly to a full house who appreciate
fully the good programs submitted. - The Pierrot Troupe are busily engaged. in an all-new program to be star ged ’shortly.
