CORRESPONDENCE

From T. H. Veale, drawing atten-' tion to the disgraceful .condition of the entrance leading to tlie houses occupied by Messrs. Drake, Logan and the writer, and requesting the Road j Committee to inspect same with a view to doing something to make the approach to and from the main road more .healthy and comfortable.—lt was 1 considered an extreme case, and cn •

the motion of Cr: Spencer and seconded' by Cr. Hyde, it was decided one load of gravel be placed at the gateways of Messrs. Drake, Logan and Veale.

From the Department of Health.— Re regular system of garbage collection and destruction, informing the Council that the Board of Health has again considered the subject, and it was felt that there was still room for improvement in many towns, also stating they had previously communicated with the Council on the matter, point-

ing out that a proper service was desirable. At the time the Council did not see its way clear to embark upon a scheme. The Department again asked that the Council .consider this important matter, and endeavour to give effect to what «ihe Department desires. The requirements of the town are the provisions of a weekly service in business areas of refuse collection. I The Department pointed but that j plague was widespread in the East, j with which we are in regular communication by shipping, and all practicable measures are taken with

regard to vessels and on the wharves, but still more is needed, and we must endeavour to have as little encouragement for rats and mice as pos-

sible. There is always danger, and it behoves us to do our best; therefore the Department asked that the service be provided, and also that the war against rats and mice be con- * tinued in the borough in’.exactly the same manner as last summer.—Cr. Murray moved and Cr. Fargher seconded, -that the matter be held over until next meeting, and have previous letter attached.

From R. N. Spiers re accourit for which has been in dispute.— On the motion of Cr. Murray, seconded by Cr. Fargher, the account was passed for payment, and the Council wish to .express its regret at the misunderstanding in the matter, and that Mr Spiers was not to blame. ROADMAN’S REPORT. During the last month, Cr H. Butt and the roadman have ploughed up both sides of Stout Street and have carted off the spoil ifom Vogel Street •to Pllminer Terrace, and have done the .same with a portion of Vogel Street from Grey Street to Ballance Street. About 56 yards of metal has been carted from the road pit near swing bridge on to the Foxton Road, which still requires about another 100 yards to put the road in order. WORKERS’ COTTAGES. Cr. Fargher, in referring to the Committee set up for the purpose of drawing up conditions of purchase, thought the Council should insist on having them drawn up by a solicitor, and on his motion, seconded by Civ Spencer, it was decided that the conditions of purchase of workers’ cottages be drawn up by a solicitor and forwarded to the committee for approval or otherwise. MISCELLANEOUS. Cr. Richardson asked that a block be erected at the tip on the Levin Road, as in its present state he considered it unsaf#. f Cr. Spencer moved that the roadman inspect and if unsafe to put it in order. Cr. Hook complained that during heavy rain the water ran across the road by his place, and was unable to get away, and suggested that a culvert should be put in.—Road Committee to inspect.

Accounts totalling £45 9/9 were passed for payment. Taxi licenses were granted to Messrs. W. Cochrane, C. Logan, and L. Trueman for hire in the /borough.
