BIG FOOTBALL IN SHANNON.
WAIRARAPA. V. HOROWHENUA
TO-MORROW
The long-anticipated rep. game, Wairarapa v. Horowhenua, will take place on the Shannon recreation ground to-morrow, and although the ground is likely to he on the heavy side on account of recent, rain, the game should .be one, of the most attractive in which the Horowhenua reps. have taken part in this season. This is emphasised all the more by the good showing made by the Horowhenua reps, against Wanganui last Wednesday, and ,by the fact, that the team will be strengthened by the inclusion of H. Jacob and,. C. Porter, who were not available last week. Jacob's quality as a forward is too well known to require any further mention here, and Porter is probably the most resourceful and best attacking back in the coast districts, besides being thoroughly sound in defence. The team to take the field to-morrow must therefore be about the'' strongest that has donned rep. colours, for the district this season, and the football pNiblic may look with confidence to seeing a great fight for premier honours. THE HOROWHENUA TEAM.
The Horowhenua side will be as follows:
Full-back: M. Johnson (Hui Mai). This player has proved a decided success in the position. He handles and kicks' well, has pace, arid for his poundage is solid in defence. Three-quarters:, T. Moynihan (Shannon) is a dangerous man when within reach of the scoring line, and puts plenty of dash into his work. He was caught napping once or twice last Wednesday when attempting to "jazz" past his tacklers,' and would have done better to have used his pace. A safe defensive player. Moses (Foxton), at centre, is playing very well. Strong in attack, takes the ball well, and is perhaps the strongest tackier in the team; he is a straight runner, and gives his supporting men every chance. Wakefield ' (Weraroa)
on the other wing, has all the qualities for )lhe position, but- at times could put a little more ginger into his work.
Five-eighths: T. Winiata (Wanderers) played a much-improved game last Wednesday, and justifies his inclusion. A safe handler and is quick to get moving. Porter (Hui Mai) is a first-class man at any part of the game, and is always on the scene
when things are happening. He. will be a big asset to the side. { Half: Jacob UUku (Old Boys) was a little below form last week, ahd will require to get the ball away a bit faster. He gets down to the heavy stuff, and with a good pack in front io-morrow should do well. I -\ '
Winger: H.. Jacob (Wanderers). "Jake" captained the Maori team to Australia a few weeks ago, and as he has gol over the knock he received on the other side, should be seen at his best aagin. His experience should be
of great, value to the team. Hookers: Bevan (Old Boys) was another member of the Maori touring team who added to his reputation. A good hooker and a very solid grafter in the open. His companion is Sands (Shannon), another good front ranker, and'a fine worker in the loose. He lollows up well, and ( in his later games has shown greatly improved form.
Forwards: Tana (Hui Mai) in'the lock position is the right man. for the place, and a fast, dashing forward. In the supports, Rewi Moyni-
han (Shannon) and Rangi Broughton (Weraroa)i Horowhenua has a pair of forwards on this coast if not in tlie province. Rewi has all the qualities to entitle him to bigger football, and opportunity alone is
wanting. Rangi's form since returning from the Maori team't tour is better than ever. The back row will comprise two Hui Mai men, R. George and Robinson. Twenty-one years of rep. football have not impaired 800 George's play, and he is showing his usual good game. Robinson lor a young player is inclined to be slow in getting to th<e; play, but is" a grafier when in amongst it.
The emergenices are: Forwards, Ransfield and Koro; backs, Waaka and Winiata.
THE VISITORS
The Wairarapa leam lias proved itself a solid combination, and will take a power of beating. To-mor-row's match, will be the final engagement in a tour that has been signally successful, every match having been won. The record of the tour is as
follows:—Against. Bush Union—won, .17 to :i. Against Waikato—won, 8 to 3. Against King Against Wanganui—won, 18 1o 13. Jn each of the games played the
Wairarapa backs have given splendid exhibitions of scientific football, and iho lot-ward* surfer little in comparison with I heir rearguard, tine team thus , forming a. formidable side. This was borne out in the match
played with Wanganui on Saturday, which Wairarapa won by 18 to 13,
their score being composed of six unconverted tries. Referring to the team after the match, a Wanganui paper says: "In Rugby, science Wairarapa were superior, and gave a fine exposition of the game. Their forwards were clever on the lines-out,
and quick to break away with dribbling i rushes, while occasionally when the ball was carried they adopted the Springbok trick of massed formation and thrusting the , ball to each other instead of passing. The' backs were sound, clever with splendid combination. The handling was beautifully, clean, and in; taking the ball in t)he air they were never at fault." This is high praise indeed,'and spectators to-morrow may expect to see something above the average when the visitors get in action. " THE WAIRARAPA TEAM. The Wairarapa team will be the • same as played against Wanganui on Saturday the personnel being as follows: Full-back: Fuller. Three-quarters: R. Booth, E. B. Booth, H. Carson. \ Five-eighths: Southgate, R. Jury. ' Half:F. Booth (captain). Wing-forward: Feast. Forwards: Clarke, Donald, Bacon, i Devine, Knowles, Desmond and Fairbrother. Reserves: M. Jury, .Morris, Harvey, Stunhell, Wickens and Skeet.
