POWER LOAN CARRIED.

BY 973 VOTES TO 26

The poll on the question of raising a loan of £260,000 for the installation of electric power and lighting in the Horowhenua district took place on Tuesday and had the highly satisfactory result of being carried by 073 votes to 26. Tlie number of votes cast was within one of 1000 or one-third of die total on the roil, which must he Regarded as a very fair percentage, specially so when the chances of the proposal being carried were regarded so favourably. The opponents oi the scheme to the number of 26 find themselves in an insignificant minority, (and happily not in a position to disturb the onward inarch of “light and progress.” Taking the polling figures individually, the Levin borough has registered by far the heaviest vote, 228 for and 6 against, whilst in the Levin booth was cast the votes oi 170, ratepayers from different parts of the .county. The Otaki borough also pollad well, 117 for and 1 against, but neither Shannon (76) or Foxton (77) evinced so much interest in the poll, as their figures indicate. On the other hand Paraparaumu for a small centre did exceedingly well to have 77 votes polled lor the proposal, with a solitary objector, and Paekakariki, Waikanae, Te Horo and. Tokomaru have also done well. The booths closed at 6 o’clock last evening and the returns came in very promptly, which enabled the returning officer (Mr P. W. Goldsmith) to announce the result shortly after 7 o’clock, a result that must give a good deal of satisfaction not only to the supporters of the scheme throughout the Horowhenua' Power District, ‘ but. to Mr G. A. Monk (chairman), Mr Overton (engineer) and members of the Power Board who have worked so well to achieve the result that has been obtained. Following are the votes cast at the various booths:
