The friends of Mrs J. Beard will be sorry to hear she is indisposed. Arrangements are well in hand lor the football match Horowhenua v. Wairarapa, to be played at Shannon on Wednesday, August 23. Mr W. Quarrie will lead the singing at the Community Sing at the Maoriland Theatre on Wednesday evening.
Cr. Hyde, acting under instructions from the Borough Council, has engaged Mr Hemmingson to prune the trees in the borough reserves.
On Sunday afternoon, the Levin Band rendei'ed several selections in the Recreation Grounds, which were much appreciated by those present. A special meeting of the Borough Council will he held this evening to confirm the resolution authorising the raising of a loan of £4500 for the purpose of acquiring land and building thereon for workers’ dwellings.
. Mr A. C. Boyd, whilst engaged in the factory of Messrs. Hyde and Boyd, had the misfortune to receive a nasty cut on the fingers, owing to his hand coming in contact with the circular saw, through a piece of wood jamming. It was necessary to. have two stitches put in.
Ratepayers are reminded of the poll being taken to-day on the proposal of the Horowhenua. Electric-power Board to raise p loan of £260,000 for the purpose of reticulating the district and carrying out the works authorised. The polling booth in Shannon is the Borough Council, office, and the polling hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. At the meeting of the Shannon Cooperative Dairy Co. on Saturday, the question of the Idairy pool came up. It was recommended by Mr Chrystal that tire meeting should strongly support the Dominion Executive, in any effort to obtain a compulsory dairy pool. It was pointed out by Mr Jewell that it was quite impossible for the Government to do anything while the two Islands were divided on the matter, and after further discussion it was decided to reject the recommendation. The meeting strongly objected to the proposal of monthly sales of dairy produce being held in New Zealand.
On Saturday, tlie Hui Mai team, of Manakau, the winners of the Horowhenua championship lor the present season, visited Palmerston North and played the; R.S.A. Club, * winning by the substantial margin ol 20 to 3. Hui Mai was superior in all departments, and had the best ol the play all through.
An amateur bookmaker tried his hand at laying a book on the recent Grand National meeting. His attractive doubles were quickly taken by bis workmates on a certain big* 'undertaking on this coast. The National Hurdle and Steeple results brought disaster to the odds-layer, and without folding his tent ire stole silently away In the night, and his old place knows him no more.
The Horowhenua County Council may fairly claim to be one of the most business-like bodies in the province, if not in the Dominion, and its meetings are a model of order and expedition. At Saturday’s meeting an extensive order paper was disposed of in a little over an hour and a-half, a tribute alike to tihe chairman’s chairmanship, the councillors’ interest in the business, and the manner in which the business is submitted to the Council by the Clerk.
