MANGAHAO NOTES.

Mr Furkett (Engineer-in-Chief), accompanied by Mr Dinnie (District Engineer) paid a visit of inspection over Hjjle whole of- the Hydro-electric works during the week. The oil engines in the No. 2 tunnel are being dismantled and preparations are being made for the installation of the new* electrically driven pumps, which are to take their place. Good progress is being made with the sinking of the shaft which is to accommodate the lock valves of the No. 2 tunnel intake, and it is already excavated hall-way to the tunnel level. The shaft is about 18ft square, and when completed will be lined and sub-dividecl with reinforced concrete.
A large staff of men are: busily engaged on the big crushing plant at Arapeti,. and several of the crushers are in position. Quite a number of trucks and other machinery arrived during the week.
A commencement has been made with the erection of a house to accomodate the Assistant Engineer (Mr T. Lindup) and his family. The excavation for the extension of the Y.M.C.A. recreation hut for the housing of the billiard'table has also been started. Mr E. M. Finlayson (chief canteen officer at the hydro works) it at present away on holiday leave. Parents are anxiously awaiting the starting of the Gamp school. /Well over the requisite number of children are at- present deprived of schooling facilities, and the Education Department have promised the necessary attention.
